I've tried doing that before: I said if you trade me this for that, then you never have to pay when you land on me and vice versa. It just got really convoluted though! So I don't play that way anymore--
And I like the Blue-Purple idea, I'll keep that in mind!

I am not the biggest fan of monopoly, even though i actually enjoy it... yeah kinda weird. main reason is that EVERYONE in my family cheats when playing it. also people like ganging up on me, they never make trades with me and will charge others only half the price if they land on their properties. oh well... i still usually beat them

My friends and I have been playing the "A Game of Thrones" board game about once a week for the last several months.
It's a strategy based board game, where you conduct a military campaign against the other players. Fans of Diplomacy would love it!

Is it like Risk?

Only in the most basic ways.
There are no dice rolls. It is more purely strategic (although, there are mechanisms for the introduction of chance, through condition cards, etc). I can honestly say, it is the most complex game that I have ever attempted to play.

This is a great time to be a board gamer. Lots of cool games have come out in the past ten years or so. Ticket to Ride, Blokus and Carcassonne are fun, great-looking games that are easy to learn and don't take forever to play. Lots of info on these and other games at: www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Board_Game_Gift_GuideI've been rereading the Empyrion books, and I was wondering if a game based on them might be of interest.

Settlers of Catan, 'nuff said

I have to agree with posts on Settlers of Catan and Carcassone, but would like to add one that is particularly fun with a large group of people (particularly if they are creative and weird - which characterizes ALL of my family): Balderdash There is also: Bible Balderdash and Beyond Balderdash
Basic premise of game: you have various words, inventors, dates, movie titles, places, that are very obscure. Everyone writes out a definition....one person writes the TRUE definition and everyone votes on which is the real definition. Once you catch on, it can be a lot of laughs.

Settlers of Catan, 'nuff said I used to say the same thing, but I don't really play that much anymore. What with the element of trying to get peole to do things for you, my silver-tongued brother can win every game. So I made it a point to never trade with him or anything, unless I knew beyond doubt that it benefited me more than him. But it was still frusterating, because he would just get the other two players to do what he wanted. So I don't play much anymore.

You just need to revisit the island with a new group of settlers! And add Seafarerers or Cities & Knights

Y'know, I really don't care for the expansion sets. For me, just the basic game is enough. Ithink it's because there's plenty of complicated games out there, but Catan is simple and yet intriguing. I do like the six player expansion though, because it's the same game, with more players...

I haven't played Cities and Knights, but I enjoyed Seafarerers. I also really like the 6 player expansion, but a few of my friends don't like the way I play. I love to trade/build/buy in between turns, prevents you from getting caught with your pants down when 7's are rolled.

My problem with Settlers is that I have moved too much since acquiring the game. Every time I get a group of friends interested in and indoctrinated into how to play the game, I move to another state or country...Very very frustrating to start all over. But, it makes it more entertaining, as I am generally the best player at the table

Is that an addition of the six player expansion? I know you can trade when it's not your turn, but I didn't know about building.
