The wuxia--or wuxu or whatever they're called, are rather like Chinese superhero films. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fits in this category, as does The House of Flying Daggers (neither of which, by the way, have I seen.) Lots of swordplay and wirework--running along treetops or (in a spectacular scene in Hero) along the surface of a still lake. Very cool. If you'll pardon the expression.

I saw The Notebook, Troy and Collateral this weekend.
Collateral I thought was a pretty decent movie. A much darker film for Cruise to play in. Jamie Foxx did a great job. The film had an interesting story line and the progression was nice. I found some things to be predictable but all in all a pretty good film.
Troy was a relatively good attempt to recreate the story of the Iliad. I'm really like Greek mythology and wasn't overly disappointed in the movie. The acting was pretty good and while the time line was very compressed, as would be expected in a film, it did a good job of hitting the primary points.
The Notebook was a very cute if somewhat sad film. There were some really funny scenes and some that nearly brought tears to my eyes. The acting was pretty good. A good date movie even though I wasn't on a date per say.

Thanks, Riothamus. It sounds cool!
Dred, I don't think Troy did a good job at all. It created an entirely different story with some scenes/themes from the Iliad.

OMG! I loved The Notebook! It was the best love story of the year, as far as I'm concerned.
Anyway...
Big Fish A super movie...directed by Tim Burton, so of course, great visuals, makes you think, makes you laugh, makes you cry. A son tries to come to terms with his father, whose life is told through his flamboyant stories. I fell in love with Ewan McGregor all over again, and the daffodil scene is the most romantic and perfect scene I've seen in years. I give this movie a 5/5.

Perhaps I was a bit vague in my statement. When I said the main points, I meant more along the lines of Troy being destroyed, the large fleet attacking, some characters getting killed but that's about it. I realized that the overall storyline had been changed quite a bit.

I was thinking along the same lines as Troy with another film. A made for TV film called the Odyssey with Armand Assante. I thought it seemed to follow closer to the traditional story line. Any thoughts on this film?

I just watched The Recruit on shiny disc (that's DVD). Colin Farrell is sexy. Are guys allowed to say that?
Anyway, it's a totally excellent film. Plot twists are, like, so last century but The Recruit is driven by them. You think you know what's going on, then it turns out that something else is going on and by the time you figure that out it turns out you were right the first time and then it turns out that that's not going on anymore, it's completely different again. Like any good thriller it doesn't make any sense at all until the end.
Oh yeah, Al Pacino is great.

Signs--picked it up for $10. Not too shoddy--though I liked Unbreakable more (Mr. Glass is so iconic, for one thing, that he's hard to top.) There's supposed to be a twist, but (perhaps because I thoroughly read up on the film long before I bought it,) I didn't catch it. Some great stuff about Providence--although it comes off as a bit pat (the hazard of planning someone's life if you aren't God is that it always comes off as a bit pat.) Story-wise, (though I know many have seen it,) it's an alien-invasion movie. It draws some heavy inspiration from Hitch-co-ck--most notably (as Shyamalan notes in one of the specials on the DVD) The Birds, and the directing style is somewhat Hitchco-ckian as well. Some will question the logic of the climax, but as a package it's a pretty satisfying thriller.
[On another note, has anyone here seen Ordet?]
[EDIT: Alas, even H-i-t-c-h-c-o-c-k falls prey to the word-replacer....]

Someone could correct me or debate with me on this, because I haven't seen Signs in awhile, but I think it was Mel Gibsons best movie, from the acting perspective. (I would say that Braveheart is his best all-around). He did a terrific job in Signs(especially when they are eating dinner.)

I saw Napoleon Dynomite on a charter bus...and I HATED it. It was beyond stupid...I like stupid stuff, but this was way, WAY extreme...good thing I had a "distraction," lol Beauty and the BeastOk...this is kind of old, and a Disney movie to boot. But I can't help it...I just love it! The music is awesome...a killer soundtrack! The visuals are great too...beautiful colors and scenery, especially for a cartoon. The singing is phenomenal, the storyline is the classic we all know and love, but most of all...it is just magical. There is just something intoxicating about the whole thing, and you just get sucked in by watching it. This gets a 5/5.

Has anyone seen Aviator yet? Is that any good? All I have is the word of one person so far... Aviator was great; they perhaps over emphasized that HH was a little insane at the expense of recognizing that he was also freakin' brilliant. Cate Blanchett's protrayal of Katherine Hepburn was absoultely spot-on and fantastic. It's an excellt movie, I enjoyed it a lot.
