The Odyssey: a made-for-TV movie we are watching in English class. It's so bad that it's hilarious. Never mind. It gets really, really sappy after Ogygia, and it's not funny anymore.

Here's a good movie that everyone should see: Ghost Dog, The Way of the Samurai.
It's excellent in so many ways...and it's been out for a while, so it should be easy to find. I bought a copy of it on dvd from Circuit City in June for like $6.95. So rent or buy it, and enjoy!

Is it a foreign film or American? (Just out of curiosity.)

Thanks; I'll have to check it out. Continuing the theme (but switching countries,): Hero--a wuxia (if that's misspelled, don't tell me ) flick whose "twist" at the end makes it borderline Communist propaganda; still, beautiful use of colour and some truly astounding wirework make it well worth seeing. The DVD is in Manderin, with subtitles, but also includes English voice-overs for the subtitle-phobic. Very much reccomended.

I think that the Sixth Sense was easily his best movie. Man, that movie gave me the chills. The Village was really good too, but I think the twist in Sixth Sense was better. But back to the movie critiques. The Phantom of the OperaHoly freakin' Moses, what a beautiful movie. The sets, the costumes, the music, everything about this movie was stunning. Especially the beginning, starting in 1919 with an auction at the rundown Paris Opera House, and then going into the overture, which shows the opera house "coming back to life". The transitions between songs and scenes were well done and interesting, and I especially enjoyed the transition from "The Mirror & Angel of Music" to "Phantom of the Opera". The acting was good too, and the singing was phenominal. And a movie to avoid is the Star Wars Holiday Special. Made in the '70's, I think everyone involved with this was on crack. And while you're watching it, you wonder if you're on crack or LSD too, and just didn't realize it. This, well it isn't really a movie, is so bad it isn't even funny. It's just painful, and a darn good waste of an hour of your life. How would phantom be to someone who doesn't care for musicals too much? Bearable? All my bloody friends wanna go see it, but apparently I'm the odd man out .

I just saw the Blue Comedy Comic Tour: Rides Again. pretty funny... but not as good as the first one...
I also watched Hide and Seek in the cinema. I liked it very much. It made me jump a couple times and I didn't figure out who "Charlie" was until the end...
But as you've noticed, I'm kinda slow on the uptake....

I saw Constantine yesterday--and, oh my lord, did I have a great time.
The movie does not flow like your typical Hollywood hero film; the film actually "feels" like a comic book. For some reason, it seems like lots of the scenes are coming in panels, and things that cross panels. It's great.
Now, on the whole, I hate Keanu. I think he's a horrible actor, and I wasn't sure about his being John Constantine (who is, after all, supposed to be blonde and British). But, the performance was at least adequate to conveying most of what the character is about--and the supporting cast and the power of the story itself really helped.
If you are a special effects junkie, this movie is for you; they SE shots are incredible. However, it isn't a movie that is driven by the special effects; it's good stuff.
I went to see the movie with two people who knew nothing about Constantine or the Hellblazer comics--one of them liked it, the other did not. I, being a big John Constantine fan, loved it. I don't know if that's enough of a random cross section to make predictions, but if angels and demons fighting for control of the world sounds like something you might even be remotely interested in, I'd say go and see it.

I just feel like commenting.... in my house, you can't afford subtitlephobia because I have a hearing loss. I don't wear my hearing aids around the house, and my mom is often on the phone while we watch movies. Subtitles are required.

Not to pry into your personal life, but were you born with a hearing loss or did it develop over time? I have a partial hearing loss in my left ear from when a college student decided to make a homemade milk carton bomb in a powerade bottle to blow the dorm window out... I was standing about 10 feet away when the blast went off...

I was born without eardrums and with the little bones in the wrong places. I've had new eardrums constructed and inserted and the bones put in their proper places, but my hearing will probably never be perfect. I can hear normal tones pretty well, but my hearing aids ensure that I don't miss stuff.

I'm glad the doctors were able to help you salvage your hearing.
