I would not live forever.

So I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest."

In this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. -- Having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

December 5 -- Morning

It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.

Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. -- We suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside.

You shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you. Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.

By strength no man shall prevail.

Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone.

No king is saved by the multitude of an army; a mighty man is not delivered by great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy. -- Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.

I ... boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

December 6 -- Morning

It is God who works in you.

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. -- A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. -- No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. -- Then I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

LORD, You will establish peace for us, for You have also done all our works in us.

December 6 -- Evening

The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

In the way of Your judgments, O LORD, we have waited for You; the desire of our soul is for Your name and for the remembrance of You. With my soul I have desired You in the night, yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early.

I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. -- The flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. -- Our sufficiency is from God. -- My grace is sufficient for you.

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

The LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. -- Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness - by whose stripes you were healed. -- As by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous.

When the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. -- There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

December 7 -- Evening

I will be like the dew to Israel.

The meekness and gentleness of Christ.

A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench.

"The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth.

And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those who are with young.

December 8 -- Morning

Through love serve one another.

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. -- Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart. -- Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. -- Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another. -- Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

We ... who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

December 8 -- Evening

The dust will return to the earth as it was.

The body is sown in corruption, ... it is sown in dishonor, ... it is sown in weakness, ... it is sown a natural body. -- The first man was of the earth, made of dust.

Dust you are, and to dust you shall return. -- One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and secure. Another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, never having eaten with pleasure. They lie down alike in the dust, and worms cover them.

My flesh ... will rest in hope. -- After my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God. -- The Lord Jesus Christ ... will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

LORD, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. -- So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? -- Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. -- To love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

So you, by the help of your God, return; observe mercy and justice, and wait on your God continually. -- Mary ... sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. "One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

It is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

December 9 -- Evening

The spirit will return to God who gave it.

The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. -- There is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding. -- The first man Adam became a living being. -- The spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward.

While we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. -- With Christ, which is far better. -- I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

No one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.

I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. -- The Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. -- We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. -- Your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

The perfect law of liberty.

You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." -- Having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. -- For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. -- I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts.

Do not let your good be spoken of as evil.

Abstain from every form of evil. -- Providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. -- For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

You, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. -- Beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. -- Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. -- Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.

Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.

It is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. -- Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you.

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. -- Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master.
