The reason the price increase hasn't gotten crazy out west yet is for two reasons. First, gas prices are determined by region--and at the moment, the region affected by the shortage is the region where the prices are highest. Second, there really is no reason for the absurd inflation of prices in a lot of areas in the South and East, except that there are a lot of scared people and a lot people willing to take advantage of a bad situation--but, it's supply and demand. The more demand for the limited supply, the more that is charged.
Plus, they're opening up part of the strategic reserve, which will cushion the blow to the rest of the country temporarily--I think the hope is to float prices until the refineries and drills in the Gulf can be stabilized.

In about a week in smalltown, IL it went from around $2 to over three. It's back down to a more 'reasonable' 2.89 at th moment .

It is now down to $2.85. I would like it to get back down to $2.50. It was not long ago, when we were wishing it back down around $2.00. Oh, how things change!

This evening, the price dropped down to $2.78. I remember a time when I would have been outraged over paying that kind of price. I remember during the Gulf War being upset when it jumped almost to $2.00

Probably true, Zeke. Hopefully we'll think about using less gas in the future - maybe trade in the SUVs for a hybrid.

Something I read in readers digest magazine: "I overheard two woman talking about gas prices. After one mentioned how expensive it was the other said 'oh, it doesn't effect me any, I always only put in twenty bucks worth'".
