He smiled lightly as he continued to point at various areas around their finished work. The people not of Otherworld that have been here helping us. Their accents weren't of this area. In fact it reminded me vaguely of New York. I'm not originally from Otherworld myself Kaie.

As Maccus finished his drink of water, he noticed Rhakar consoling Kaie, others working together, and others just chatting or laughing. He was glad for these new surroundings. So much better here. He hoped he could build a new life for himself here with these people, and also hoped he could forget his past.

Kaie stared up at Rhakar in amazement. "Where were you from? How long have you been here? Oh..." she blushed, "I can't believe it was so obvious! Could you help me fit in better?"

Rhakar glanced around, checking to see who might hear what he said to her before responding. I'm from the United States, Iowa to be specific. I was traveling in Europe checking out historic sights and the next thing I knew, I was here. That was nearly ten years ago. Since then, I've only returned a few times to my previous life. I was well established and could do as I pleased in my former life so being away was never an issue.
He stopped talking as one of the workers passed by carrying some logs to another side of the hall. Ignoring her blushing form, Rhakar continued. It really wasn't that obvious. They were actually dressed quite well and acted the part of the locals. One of them forgot to remove his watch though. I noticed and so did several of the others in that group. They commented to him and it was quickly addressed. I never noticed anyone else taking any note of them.
You fit in quite well actually. How long have you been here?

Seeing Maccus looking at her out of the corner of his eye, Kaie straightened and grinned at Rhakar. "We'll have to talk later when we have less company. Let's get this job done."

Nodding his head in agreement he turned and walked to where a number of the supplies were being stored. He quickly took a look at what they had and thought about what they would need to build the hall for the village.
Motioning to several of the nearby men, he told them his ideas and they quickly set off for the forest to collect more timber.

Kaie looked around wondering what to do. Rhakar returned for a moment and called for Maccus, so Kaie took the opportunity to approach. "I'm going to help the village women with the food later, but is there anything I can do here to help prepare the site?"

He glanced around in search of something for Kaie to work on before making up his mind. We could use a some mud to pack into the seems between the wood. It will give us better insulation. Beyond that, I think we'll have to wait for more daylight before we work on the roof very much more. You can do that or help out with the food. It's really up to you.

She grinned at Rhakar as Maccus hurried over. "I'll see what I can do."
Just then one of the women gestured for Kaie to come over.

That night around the firepit the entire village gathered once again for the evening meal. During the past week each evening had been mostly the same. The newcomers and the inhabitants of Sherwydd had broken bread together, laughed and sang and bonded together. At the end of the evening Griogar would stand and tell the newcomers more about the surrounding area. The chief welcomed them with opened arms and never questioned how the newcomers had arrived in Sherwydd.
Here are some of the things they learned: Sherwydd, the region, was located between the upper banks of Loch Lomond and Loch Katrine, where the island was located. Sherwydd, the village, was located on the east side of the moor between the two lochs at the edge of the upper tree line. The southern boundary was Glen Arklet where the Arklet stream connected the two lochs. (I will post a map next week.) The glen was a gently sloping pasture. The sheep and shaggy cattle that the village shepherd maintained were often down in the glen during the days. They were kept in the roughly built pens near the village at night. Griogar loved horses and had mentioned on many occasions how he would like to have a herd of fine stallions sheltered in the glen someday. Sherwydd was not a large village consisting of only a few families. (A list of these NPCs will be posted next week as well.) There was the shepherd, the farmer and others. There were several children of varying ages throughout the village and an old widow as well. The hunters helped to gather food for Sherwydd's little community and often went deep into the Loch Ard forest to the south. When they could not bring back enough to feed everyone the meals were supplemented with one of the sheep or cattle. There was fish at every meal and they were starting to have a plentiful supply of vegetables from the farmer's efforts.
However on this night, Griogar, satisfied that the newcomers understood their surroundings well enough, told more about himself and how he had come to Sherwydd in the first place.
"I have been telling you about Sherwydd, our little portion of Caledon, but I have not mentioned why we came to this place. Now, I am no senneachie, or bard, so I'll not sing my history but it will probably help if I tell you more about who I am. I am Griogar Machae, third great grandson of Cynan Machae, him who ken Llew Silver Hand. It has been nearly 100 years since the Hero Feat was performed and Albion has had no other Aird Righ in that time.
My father rules Caledon now and my two brothers are more than capable of following in his footsteps. I have too much independence in me to want to be so tied down by the governing of our people. I love this land and its open sky, so I asked my father to grant me lordship over it.
We are greatly blessed altogidder by his graciousness and by your recent arrival. I cannot thank you enough for your help with this hall. It is a grand site, I thought I would never see. The others who live here in Sherwydd are nearly all members of my family in some way. And tonight we wish to honor you our new friends.
But the Goodly-Wise has brought you here for a purpose. What that purpose is, I do not ken. We will learn that soon enough. Until then, take your ease my friends. You are among family."

New rule....for me at least. Thou shalt not post when in a rush. Okay, now this is where it belongs. Kaie lay curled in a ball against the cool of the night. She had not yet figured out how to make a comfortable bed, and was considering resorting to a hammock. She had awakened far to early, in her opinion, for the first light of dawn was only now touching the skyline through her eastern window. As she stretched, she heard shouts and cries from the direction of the village. What could be going on? Jumping to her feet, she stepped onto the branch that was her front step and looked toward the village. She didn't think this was an attack, though it was hard to tell at this distance. Jumping down from the branch, she released her boat and paddled to the inlet near the village, where a group of angry villagers surrounded a defiant man.

Hearing the shouts and angry voices, Rhakar ran from the forest, his sword in hand expecting trouble. As he approached he saw a group of men standing around a man who appeared to feel completely correct in his stance. What has happened? The tone of his voice was firm and drew the eyes of several men to him.

Griogar replied, "We caught this man trying to steal our cows."
To the man, he said, "We'll, have your name and the reason you think stealing from the Machaes is worth your trouble."

Rhakar looked the man over carefully before spotting a small tatoo partially hidden by his sleeve. Stepping forward quickly he grabbed the man's arm and stared. So, you've returned.

The bright green eyes flashed from Rhakar to the stranger and back again. Recognition had passed between the two men and the tension rose in the gathering. Rhian was the oldest daughter of the farmer Tegh in the village. She was training to become a healer from the old widow in the village and hoped to someday travel beyond the lochs and learn from the bards what she might of the healing ways. For now she was satisfied with what the old woman was teaching her. She had enough to keep herself busy with between the farming and caring for her younger brother and sister in their mother's absence. Still she felt drawn to these strangers who were building a home for themselves on the lake. The light in their eyes differed from the light in her people's eyes. She hoped to become closer to them in the coming years.
