Kaie laughs as she sees the rest of her group arrive bearing the rope and fasteners to help complete her home. They pile into the remaining boat and paddle over, bringing their contributions to what is becoming a feast. She sighs quietly as they greet the newcomers. Soon they will leave and she will be alone in this new land. Her gaze falls upon Rhakar and Maccus. Her smile broadens. She will not be alone after all. There are new friends to be made.

As he pauses a moment in the work, he notices a man standing on the shoreline. The way the man stands and carries himself at once indicates him as being someone of importance and stature. Rhakar glances towards Maccus and Kaie before nodding his head in the man's direction. I'll see about the man on shore. I believe him to be from the village.
(OOC: I'll be writing my verbal text in yellow from here on. Just something to help distinguish us.)

Kaie's island is getting a little crowded, but the team bustles about, stashing their burdens and settling in for the meal. She had already been through the village, and hopes there is no problem with building here. From what she had been told, the islands were completely unclaimed.
Soon they the group is eating enthusiastically, but she keeps an eye to the shore, where Rhakar and the stranger are talking. Perhaps Rhakar will invite him over to eat with them.

Inclining his head to the man, Rhakar introduces himself. My name is Rhakar. I have come here seeking a new home. I hope our presence here isn't going to trouble your village.

Griogar replied evenly, "I am Griogar, the Chief of this region. As I told the woman, Kaie, yesterday, I do not mind you making your home here. There are some who have already done so and live in the village up the hill. I only ask one thing of you, Rhakar. Fealty. I am not a king so I do require gifts or tarifs. But as Chief of Sherwydd, I do require peace and that through fealty. As with the woman, if you and your friends make this pledge, I will pledge to protect you as long as it is in my power to do so."
Griogar then placed both of his hands on the handle of the hatchet as close to the blade as possible and extended it toward Rhakar. With the blade at the top and the handle pointed toward the ground, the gesture was meant as a pledge of loyalty by both individuals. By placing his hands under the chief's, Rhakar would accept the conditions of fealty and Groigar would accept the responsibility of protection.
Having judged that Rhakar was not a stranger to the customs of land, Griogar had been straight forward with the man. The day before he had explained more clearly what the symbolism behind it meant to Kaie, because she had come from a 'foreign land' to Sherwydd without any knowledge of it customs. Once she understood, the oddly dressed woman had accepted the arrangement and asked to build her home on the island.

Rhakar knelt and placed his hands beneath that of Groigar. I do honor your condition and pledge my fealty. Should you ever require anything of me, I'm your man. He rose and placed his hand across his heart as he inclined his head once more.

"And I am your servant," Griogar responded according to the custom.
Impressed by Rhakar's heartfelt display, the Chief asked him to bring everyone on the island up to the village that night. "There will be good food and fellowship even if there is no hall. And since most of them appear to be newcomers, I will tell them more about this region of Sherwydd and the Loch that fills it. Well met, Rhakar. I must go and prepare the village for your arrival."

Inclining his head in a show of respect for the Chief he responded in kind. We shall join you this evening Griogar. I know you shall find us worthy friends. Turning, he quickly made his way back to the island and shared his conversation with the head of the village.
He glanced around at the gathered faces and smiled. I think a sign of our good fellowship would be to offer to help build a hall for the village. What say the rest of you?

Where there is work to do, you can count on me, replied Maccus. He believed this was the perfect opportunity to show his worth to everyone. And he was truly glad to be a part of this new and promising villiage. He began to see the possiblities, especially concerning this particular island as well as the lake. But, putting his own dreams aside, he looked forward to what could be accomplished for this group and this villiage.

Kaie looked to her team. "We have a good many extra logs. What say you?"

All those present nodded their heads in agreement at the idea.
Rhakar smiled and quickly continued the work knowing their time would be somewhat limited before they would be needed in the village.

Kaie waved goodbye to her team in the early morning light. That they were continuing on to find a friend settled elswhere had seemed a good cover for the multiple vanishing, but now she wondered if it would actually work.
She almost envied them their return to airconditioning and microwave dinners, though she had been preparing to visit Albion for her whole life, it seemed. Brushing a tear from her cheek, she turned away as the last man vanished into the early morning mist. Her own shelter was nearly complete on its island, and it would soon be concealed by the leaves of the trees in which it perched.

Maccus noticed that Kaie was shedding a tear at the parting of some of their group. He hoped it was a tear of joy, but he did suspect there was something more to this trip. Shrugging, he walked over to get a drink of water and thought some more.

He had watched as a large contingent of their work force vanished into the mists. Walking casually over to Kaie, he pulled her aside and whispered to her while pointing at various areas of the new hall. It seems they have returned to the other side. I wondered how many of them were here helping us. They stand out somewhat.

Kaie stared up at him and stammered, "Wh..what are you speaking of?"
How could he possibly know? They hadn't been that obvious, had they? She looked at Maccus. Did he also suspect something?
