The time had been difficult for everyone, the rebuilding required a great deal of effort and the fear of being found out was constantly on the minds of those living here now. As the days and weeks went by the fear slowly settled back into the corners of people's minds and with it came joy and happiness as signs of finishing first one structure and then another began to take shape.
Rhakar had lived not far from the main village, nestled back in the foothills in a small home he had built for himself. It was barely something that would keep a gentle breeze from him but it was all the shelter he wanted until the village was completed.
Stopping in his work, he smiled at two of the men he had been working with when he saw Kaie march off into the woods. Setting his tools down, he set off after her, hoping he might engage her again in conversation.

Kaie turned as a branch snapped behind her. "Oh, hi, Rhakar." Lifting the shovel base, she waved it at him. "I'm determined to make a proper handle for this."
Brushing a tangle of hair off her forehead, she leaned back against a nearby tree. "Whew! We've accomplished a lot. I never realized how quickly a village could grow when people put their minds to it. The history books I used to read tended to make the old ways we're using here seem slow. It's hard to wrap my mind around all that's happened."

He smiled as he strolled over near her before leaning against one of the larger trees several paces away. "Good luck the the handle. What type of wood are you thinking of using?"
A deer stopped in a clearing some distance off but his line of sight gave him a good view of the large animal with a full head, a true giant and king of its kind. His thoughts drifted for a second to all that had been accomplished and how the wildlife was returning again to this area after a long absence. Returning to himself, he turned away as the deer ran off. "These people have a wonderful spirit that desires for peace and a good life, one they will work very hard to obtain. The old ways are challenging at times but they work wonders when people put their hearts into it."

Kaie grimaced. "I've been working with green wood so far, and the handles just don't seem to last. I'm thinking of finding a dry branch somewhere, but so far I don't have much of a plan. I could use some of that ancient know-how right now, I think."

He smiled lightly as he kicked at some loose dirt. "That green wood can be challenging to be sure. There might be some dry wood in the thickets not far from here. At least there might be some if those who had gone searching for more firewood haven't taken it all."

Using a large rock, Kaie hammered the new handle into place. "Thanks for the help, Rhakar. Have you seen Beagan recently? He's doing a lot to help, but he seems sad. I was hoping you might speak to him."

He smiled lightly as he admired the new handle. "It looks good and don't mention it. I'm happy to help."
Turning he looked about and thought for a moment before he replied. "Come to think of it, no I haven't seen Beagan lately at all. I shall look for him and see what I can do to cheer his mood."
