I have no idea what a fortified town would look like. *sigh* And I don't have time to research it now. Feel free to email me any links you think might help here.
Oh, and Chip, I don't suppose you could locate this town on the map somewhere? I'll need another tribe nearby, within a couple days walk, later on in the story. Feel free to name these places as you want. I'll use whatever you come up with. If you don't have time, don't worry. I'm sure I can do without a map. *grin*

Here's what I would have in mind for a fortified town. Thinking that this location must fit the environment we find ourselves, I would guess that there is a wood and timber palisade surrounding woodens walls standing roughly twenty feet in the air. If it was built on a small rise for strategic purposes, a central path would lead up to a gate. The majority of the dwellings would be inside the stronghold with only a few outbuildings elsewhere. A stream would be needed somewhere close by for fresh water.
Some timber/woods should be close by as well to provide firewood. Inside the walls, there would be a central hall where the leader and his family had residence. In addition, there might be the rooms for the main advisors as well. Also inside the walls, there would be a number of other buildings or homes for the main bulk of the populace. Pretty much everything would be made of wood, thatch and baked mud.
Stables would be located someplace safe and secure as well as a location for any livestock that are brought within the walls during the night hours.
These are just a few ideas that you can toss around. I've other thoughts as well but I don't want to spell out everything the way I would see it.

Sounds great! Any world-building you're willing to take on is fine with me. I really am trying to limit the time I spend on this. *grin* Far better to work on world-building for my novels. I'm thinking that this town is in Loch Ard forest, perhaps on one of the rivers that feed into Loch Lomond. Of course, this depends on how far one can walk in a day...

hmm ok I have read what you guys have so far in this thread and the story thread havnt got to the other oe with the map yet... I havn't done RPGing before...well I did kind of one at another site but it wasnt detailed and thought out it was you had a person and you added played it and made up details as you went along... so I have only very minimum idea of building a character... have you got a system your characters are based on? I do know there are several diffrent gaming systems out there like D&D. secondly I have no idea about the SoA boooks I have them beside me but want to finish dream thief (I am up to chapter 12)before getting onto them and I havnt had anything to do with celtic stuff...do I need to know any of this stuff to get involved?
and now I guess I will go read the last thread I saw down the bottom there LOL

Hey, don't worry about the Celtic stuff. I'm not exactly a star student of it either. I only have a few impressions, none of which I've used. If you bring your character over from the real world, as some of us have done, you can even bring your favorite foods and modern sensibilities. Do check out the welcome thread, as I think we discussed this there also.

Well, we haven't really based what we do on any specific game system. This is pretty much just generic RPing in the celtic style. The general theme is from SoA but we expand things as needs be. It's pretty much just make it up as you go. If people have specific questions about things, we can ask them here but otherwise make up your own story for your character.
Once you get into reading SoA you'll get a better idea about where people are coming from. Some people are natives to Albion and others are those who crossed over from Earth. The rules we've basically established surround not bringing modern day abilities and items into Albion.
For example, we don't really want high tech machinery, guns, electronics and things of that nature. It's very basic stuff. Almost old world technology to get things done.
You can begin a character in pretty much any way you like. There is a village where most of us started out but you can come in from anywhere. You could be out by yourself and find your way to one of the villages. There are two now that are being used.
You don't really need to know anything specific about celtic lore to get involved. We're pretty easy to work around. If you have specific questions or ideas you want to bounce around before getting started, feel free to post them or PM them to one of us and we'll help you out.

hmm so being new to all this... umm what do I need to say about my character? does it need stats or anything? do you have a list as to what I need to make up for it? and it does have to be from earth right? I think you said it could be animal... I guess not animals that talk though LOL. the girl I had for the story we did elsewhere could talk to animals...if she comes from earth I guess that would be out right?
uh I think I reek of newbie here LOL

LOL
Don't worry about it. It just takes some getting used to. This isn't like many RP games. There aren't stats or life totals to deal with. This is basically just creating your own story and acting it out as you wish. No set ending or anything along the way. Make it up as you go.
If you're coming from earth, then you probably won't be able to use the ability to talk to animals. I'm not sure if anyone in Albion would have that ability either. If you were a bard in Albion that might make things more interesting with special abilities but otherwise it's pretty basic.
You use whatever abilities you want with basic human nature though. You can be strong or weak, super intelligent or less than that. Pretty much anything is open for RPing in here. Supernatural abilities are more the extreme that we haven't gotten into at this point.

I think the ability to understand animals... not talk to them, really, but read their postures and know about how they respond to situations would work. Kind of an expansion of what happens when you have a pet and you know what mood they're in and if something's wrong just from the way they act.
If you assume that's an ability of your character, an ability they learned by wandering through the woods or from someone, we won't mind if you just skip the technical part about how your character knows these things.
I'm thinking instead of saying, "because the rabbit's ears went straight up, she knew it was scared of a predator"... saying "She saw the rabbit startle and crouched in the bushes, knowing that the hunter was nearby." While the rabbit can't say, "I see the hunter!" She still can figure it out...
*laugh* Kaie certainly knows far more about hunting and survival than I do. If I get to a part I don't know about, I either make it up on the spur of the moment, search it up online if I have time, or just assume it's possible somehow and skip the whole explaining how it was done part.
So far, everyone has been very forgiving. This is, after all, for fun. It's not a technical dissertation on celtic culture or even a novel that will be read by people far more versed than myself.

Karenee is quite right on this. Just remember that this is all for fun. If you're not having fun with it then don't do it. We aren't going to force people to participate in this area.
There are more things to do than the RPing. We just need to keep them active.

Okay, I was skimming over Sherwydd, and it looks cool, but I'm kind of lost as to how I can contribute. (Sorry I haven't been here in FOREVER.) Should I just start in?
And would someone please be so kind as to explain the basic plot? Or is there none?

By all means, jump right in! Once you've figured out what you want your character's history to be, you can choose to post it in the reference thread if you want, but the key thing is to step in and get going!

You can jump in wherever you want to go.
The plot lines are always changing. There really isn't one central theme to the entire deal.
There is a plot right now involving Kaie, Rhian, Cyfnach and a few others. The basic principal up till now is a chief has brought his daughter back to be with him after years apart. The story is evolving though. Everything else is up for grabs.

ok my character is shylah ( I don't think I saw anyone using that name) she has black hair and blue eyes, she is about 6 foot tall. age 23. she is a veternarian on earth and has a love of the outdoors she is often camping or hiking in her spare time and as a child grew up on a farm. she can read animals well so much so she has earned the tag of Dr Doolittle from towns folk. she comes from a country town in western Australia and is fairly friendly but a little shy tending to watch people and get a feel for them before revealing anything about herself. Shylah decided to go camping in an area she hadnt been before but had always been drawn to because of aboriginal folklore about it being a magic area where a fair skinned man which they called a ghost had appeared to them centuries ago. mystery and folklore intrigued shylah and she had finally gotten a week off work to explore this myth and experience the beautiful natural surroundings that the area offered including caves and waterfalls. she had been there three days exploring, hiking and swimming catching her own food and just relaxing from her full on work at the surgery. In the afternoon of the third day she was swimming and noticed a cave under one of the nearby waterfalls she goes in to explore as she gets through the waterfall and is climbing into the cave she slips, stumbles and falls but instead of being where she was she finds herself in a strange place. ok is that enough background? should this go here or the other thread? is the talking in yellow text? if so how do we make text yellow on this site? also what is the code for the invisible text? and of course I want to be in it I knew I didnt have to, I am just still trying to work you guys out and I tend to want to know exactly what I am doing so I don't stuff things up LOL hmm I know there was something else I wanted to ask but can't think of it now
