Has anyone seen Madagascar? Seriously funny movie. It's the first computer animation movie that's had a lot of physical comedy. It makes you really pay attention to what's going on in the background. Dancing leamers are great! I took my daughter to see Madagascar. It was a couple laughs short of hilarious. Great for kids and adults, and Schwimmer's character was outrageously funny. Although some of the comedy was rehashed Chris Rock takes, there were several instances where I laughed out loud. And - spoiler coming - there is a scene where the military penguins are sneaking around and overtaking a cargo ship I about busted my gut. Pretty clean for kids - most of the "adult" jokes went way over my daughter's head. She had a blast.

Batman Begins: I absolutely loved it. Directly after seeing it, I rented the Burton stuff for comparison's sake, and was amazed at how much heart this new film had, compared to previous attempts. Heart and ambiguity--there's some meat there. In my book, it trumps both the Spiderman films, which I thought were grand. I really can't reccomend it too highly.

I just watched National Treasure on DVD at home at loved it. Watched it again the next day. It's also cool that they had a secret code thing. I cheated and did a search on the internet to find them out. My 5.5 year old daughter watched Madagascar this weekend with her Grandma and liked it. She said it was funny, but it doesn't seem like she was real excited about it.

To rehash the Mr./Mrs. Smith flick, I saw that a couple days ago - if you're married, you have to see it. Singles will enjoy it as well, but there is an added little something that only married people will fully appreciate.

OK - If I'm going to disagree whole-heartedly with Hinata, at least it's just about a stupid movie. DON'T SEE WAR OF THE WORLDS!! Agh! I feel robbed! The funny part is that, after all the hoopla surrounding Cruise's craziness, his acting was the only thing that held that movie together. The special effects were awesome - kind of reminded me of Terminator a bit. But the good acting and good effects were destroyed by the fact it is just a bad movie. I can't believe this is a Speilberg film! OK - let me list the most obvious problems with this film. a. The EMP blast supposedly wipes out all electronics in the whole city. Cruise gets the only car working because they changed the solenoid? Unless the "new" solenoid was sitting in a lead case, it wouldn't have worked either. b. Despite said EMP blast, there is an entire scene dedicated to a guy filming with a digital camera. Huh? c. If these aliens are so hi-tech, couldn't they develop some type of thermal imaging system? I got real sick of people hiding behind half-missing walls and the aliens too stupid to find them. d. If said aliens were planning this for millions of years, wouldn't they have discovered there are more organisms than just humans on the planet? I mean, anyone that adept with space travel would be familiar with micro-organisms. e. Speaking of the aliens, why couldn't they explain some things. Like, how and why they created the whole thunderstorm thing. Was that some type of mothership or time dimension or something? And why did they need our blood so badly? How did they live before? It's not intriguing - it's just stupid. f. Why were the driving paths so obvious? I mean, interstates littered with vehicles, neighborhoods that look like a junkyard hit by an F5 tornado - but always a clear driving path for Cruise and family. Pathetic. g. Speaking of destroyed neighborhoods. A commercial airliner falls from the sky into a neighborhood, and all the major pieces of the craft are within 30 yards of each other? Please! h. And the ending - it left you feeling like you just watched the 2nd and 3rd quarter of a football game. No beginning and no end - just a lot of action.
I also must say there was an incredible amount of gore. Blood and entrails all over the place. I don't particularly mind, but it certainly didn't have the effect it was meant to have. I didn't feel any compassion for the human race - I just felt like I was watching a really bad movie with a lot of WOW effects.

War of the Worlds Dakota Fanning literally carries this whole movie. Couldn't take my eyes off of her whenever she was on screen. (might have had something to do with the fact that Tom can't act but that may be just me) I really really hope that she will be able to make that jump from child to adult star smoothly because she is just amazing. Like all Tom Cruise movies he's got a scene where he is running within the first 20 minutes. (Not kidding...watch all of his other movies...he has a scene where he runs in EVERY single one) He does have a decent "crying" scene where he continues to look constipated. Spielberg just needs to stop using him. I know they hit it off in Minority Report (which I liked, btw) but honestly! There is even the standard scene where he takes off his shirt. Anyone would have been better in this role. I never for a second believed that he was their father even at the end. It was more like a big brother feel the whole way through. Sad really but there you go For those of you who are H.G.Wells fans should know that this movie pales in comparaison to the book and even the first movie. They've changed the dynamic of the movie to focus more on the rebuilding of relationships between a father and his (way better actor's than he'll ever be) children. SPOILERS BELOW!!!!! The storyline as a whole is just weak. The "aliens" have been on earth for thousands of years...studying us. (BTW, they look like the aliens from Independence Day...not kidding!) But what ends up killing them in the end is an antibody or something like that in our blood. NOW...after studying a race for thousands if not millions of years don't you think they would have, I don't know, maybe perhaps, tested their reaction to us in some way? Well not these technologically advanced and superior beings...oh no...they just start dying after about 3 days because the plants they eat are "watered" with our blood which kills them. Can't you just imagine that alien scientist before his superiors...."Ummm all I can say is...Oops. Didn't think of that one. My bad!"
I mean COME ON! Retarded much? Basically if you go in there not expecting anything from Cruise and a lame storyline then you're good. Go watch it. Dakota was wonderful, as was Miranda Otto. Her 3 minutes on screen were very good. Overall...really wish I could have the 2 odd hours of my life back...renting would have been WAY better if at all. ~Sarah

Okay...now that I've got that War of the Worlds off my chest on to a different and OH SO MUCH BETTER MOVIE!!!! The following is simply what you would have seen in the previews....so no worries! Dear Frankie is the story of a boy who father is the sailor on the merchant vessel. They have never met but keep in contact with each other through letters. Soon enough you learn that it is not Frankie's father BUT his mother that is writing the letters. (You find out why later in the movie) Not knowing this, Frankie tracks his "father" all over the world by way of a map and stick pins. Then one day Frankie learns that his "father" is coming into port where he is living. The movie goes on from there with Lizzie, Frankie's mother, hiring a stranger to "act" as the boy's father. This has to be one of my favorite movies of the year. The story is so heartfelt and the acting is just superb. Gerard Butler is probably the only recognizable name. (He was the Phantom in the movie version released late last year.) The movie takes you on a journey through the dynamic of a mother and son as they both struggle to protect each other from things that eventually have to be faced in order to move forward in life. It is a great movie but that's just my opinion...so take it for what it's worth. Has anyone else seen this? Thoughts? ~Sarah

Yeah, I was really surprised at how much I liked it. Don Cheadle is just great in anything. Pierce was good. The story was more original than I anticipated and I liked that. The dynamic between Pierce and Salma was good. There were some really funny parts. The writing was tight and well paced.
Overall I liked the movie quite a bit.
