Tomorrow morning I am planning to start my book. I've wanted to write one for years, but my inner critic always calls a halt. This time I plan to finish.
I haven't decided if I'm going to put it online yet; but I may post snippets.
I wanted to ask you guys... if it seems to be going really slowly, then please threaten, coax, cajole, and yell at me to continue. You don't need to do it all the time, just every two months or so maybe, if you don't mind. Thanks!

This is something I have wanted to do for years, and will do one day soon.
I think its a worthwhile exercise even if you don’t intend to get published, you become the creator of a whole new world that does not exist till that point, very worthy IMO.
What is it going to be about?

I think I may be following the adventures of a boy leaving home and sailing away somewhere... at least until I start to hate what I've done and think of a new idea.
Many thanks for your words of encouragement!

Many thanks for your words of encouragement! Good luck on your story. As I have posted before, just write the story that is burning to be told. It will come in spurts of creativity, but don't force yourself. Allow your creative juices to flow and write as the spirit moves.

you are right, Twrch. I sometimes go considerable lengths of time without writing, but my Imagination wins out and I start a new story... most of mine end up being pathetic stories though, or just poorly written.

Don't give up. Terry Brooks wrote a few stories he hated before coming up with the Sword of Shannara. He ended up using pieces of those previous stories to write his book. Also, remember... you are your worst critic. Stephen King hated his first novel... Carrie. He threw it in the fireplace and his wife pulled it out and sent to the publisher, scortch marks and all. It ended up being a best seller. Just keep writing... You can always critique later. Good Luck!

Good luck, if you haven't started on this yet.
As someone who has completed a novel, and who is going to begin another in the very near future, let me advise you of one thing. You may know this actually, but it bears repeating.
If you post your novel anywhere in "public" (i.e. your own website, message board forums, etc.) it is considered "published" by the literary world. Mind you, this is referring to your entire novel, not just snippets. (There is a percentage cap on how much of it you can post as a snippet; I think it's somewhere around 20% but I could be wrong.)
If you're unsure about trying to get it published right now, the safest thing to do is to just e-mail it to people who want to beta-read it for you. Post here and say, chapters one through four are done, who wants them? And then send it off to whoever replies. This way, it's not out there in public and thus not "published" so you won't run into any legal trouble later. (The odds are you wouldn't have any in the first place, but you never know; this board is affiliated with a very well-known and respected author, so anything posted here could somehow make it to potential publishers and it would ruin your chances; I'm told most publishers don't want to deal with people who have had things "published" on the internet to begin with, and they absolutely will not re-publish a work that has been published on the web in its entirety.)
If you're 100% certain there's no way you'd ever publish it, then post it how you like. But if there's even a bit of uncertainty, it's better safe than sorry!
Best of luck with it! I'll be gearing up a thread soon with some tidbits on my own forthcoming work.

I hope I haven't ruined my chances by posting my prologue and Chapter One at Terry Brooks' site... Both have changed considerably since posting, but still.... If you think it will hurt my chances, I'll ask the mods to delete those threads...
