This book has settled into memory since highschool, when I read it last. I'll be savoring it again this week, and thought to open a thread in case anyone else would like to join me or comment based on past reading. Click here for Amazon's coverage. It was delightful to find my copy for sale at the library last night, a 1943 edition, too! I like old books--they smell like history and the touch of their pages is gentler--not as though that influence is stronger than pecuniary restraint, but this was inexpensive, so there was no struggle. I also collected a copy of Patrick, but it'll have to wait. Fond memories of The Robe have a stronger pull.

Eh, I'm not sure if I'll ever overcome the memories of that terrible movie enough to want to read the book.

Oh, no! NEVER watch a movie before reading its book...unless the book is written from the movie. I really think you'd love The Robe, CoI. Just pretend it isn't the same story. Aside from a few misplaced historical facts, it is excellent, filled with deep-thinking, complicated characters. *sigh* Sometimes I wish the theatrical world could keep its grimy mitts off the better books, at least until they find someone who genuinely values the whole story.

hehe, I didn't intend to watch the movie, but these things get absorbed when one babysits sisters whose dearest pleasure is watching and rewatching the same movies time and again.
...but perhaps I will try the book sometime. **adds it to mental library shopping list**

Upon finishing "The Robe."
This is a thinking book. There is a lot of discussion of deep issues, things we don't always think about. It's harder to read than I remembered, but that's partially because I'm more distracted these days and not able to just sit and read through till morning like I used to.
The plot is strong and well-driven by incredible characters. Even though I remembered the story, I still found myself reading as fast as possible to find out what would happen next. Highly recommended.

Karenee, Actually, I love The Robe and every once in awhile pull off the shelf my old used copy and read it again. I love how a community (I believe it's called Arpino) and lives are changed as Marcellus lives out and proclaims the Gospel. Seems like what we are called to do in the church. As a pastor, I've used it as an illustration in both of the congregations I have served as I believe it's a powerful message. I've had a number of people go out and read it based on that, and really enjoy it as well.

Well, I did decide to buy it and am enjoying it tremendously. I decided to use it to fulfill a class free reading assignment so am going slowly, but it is great. Thanks for encouraging me, karenee!
