I am reading the Ghost of Onyx by Eric Nylund. It's part of the Halo series.
It's pretty decent so far (I'm about half-way through), but it doesn't center around Master Chief.

I just finished Ghosts of Onyx....it was amazing. I couldn't sleep last night, so I got the majority of the way through it, only to finish it this morning in a half-hour. Ahh! So good.

I have to second Jherprincess' love of Baronness Orczy - finding out that there was more than one Pimpernel book rocked my world in high school!
A couple of good reads lately have been: The Naming The Riddle both by Alison Croggon - tales of girl who is rescued from slavery to discover she is a bard of great power - well written with a good story line and unique characters
First Rider by Kristen Britain - sequel to the Green Rider - fantasy story of a girl who becomes a Rider (messenger) for the king's service, but whose gifts are needed to defend the kingdom from an old threat.
Child of Immanuel, I saw that you are interested in some of the Jewish background of your faith. If you don't mind reading non-fiction, Alfred Edersheim wrote some books about the historical context behind Biblical events that are fascinating. The easiest to read is "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah". What makes the perspective unique is that Edersheim was a Jewish rabbi before converting and he uses his knowledge of Jewish writings (at the turn into the 20th century) to interpret events in the Bible.

Oooh, very interesting recommendation, hamameliss. I'm going to look it up too. Any author with that sort of experience of his subject has to bring new perspective. And... I found it online.

I would also recommend:
A King in Exile: The First Volume of the Last Book of the Kings by H. M. Snow
I haven't read the second or third volumes, but I really enjoyed the first.
