I've been reading The Hobbit in Spanish. One thing that confuses me is that Bilbo and the dwarves keep using the vosotros forms, even when only speaking to one person. If you do read Spanish, do you have any idea why? Anyone who reads any foreign language can sympathize with this next complaint. The poetry just does not lend itself to my English ear; the rhythm is completely unlike that of the original poem.

Its polite. Its the same in German. A teacher is called( 50 years ago) like plural, also adults who you don't know good. I am learning Spanish in my first year.
