Ok, this one isn't fiction, but it is an INCREDIBLE book, by Dr. Frank Santi Russell.
If you are at all interested in the spy/counterspy game--and how awesome (and risky) it was in the classical world. He goes into a lot of depth about how the Greeks learned the espionage game from the Persians, how the Greek tradition of having proxenoi developed into private intelligence rings, and how double agents and exiles factored into the gathering of information and the spreading of disinformation.
And yeah, I should confess--Dr. Russell is one of my teachers (and I'm pleased to number him also among my friends). But that has in no way detracted from my objectivity in reading this book.
