Am I the only person here who has read Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels? Holy hell he's about the funniest thing I've ever laid my eyes on! He utterly takes the mickey out of just about everything -- religion, warfare, military, the music business, the film business, China, death, witches, pyramids, pixies, police life, barbarians over the age of 80, you name it. Nothing is sacred to him. There have been times I've had one of his novels at my desk at work, and I came across something so hilarious I've had to put the book down and laugh til my sides absolutely ached, tears were running down my face and I could not breathe. Pratchett is like Monty Python meets the Darkover series and has a seriously twisted baby.
I think my favorite characters of his are the Nac Mac Feegle (especially Rob Anybody) - and my favorite book he's written is "A Hat Full Of Sky".
RUN to your nearest bookstore and grab every Discworld novel they have and devour them.
Oh, I should mention a book he collaborated with Neil Gaiman on - "Good Omens". That one is bloody hilarious too. That one NEEDS to be made into a movie.

It's not a series, as such. It has recurring characters, and the books progress more or less chronologically, but they all have separate plotlines, except for the Color of Magic and the Light Fantastic, which are, conveniently, the first. in the series.
That said, it isn't vital that you read them in order, although it is helpful. But all of them through Guards!Guards! (I think) are spoiler-safe for later books. The books have chronological lists in the front of all the books, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
