I love to read historical fiction books and just want to know what books of this genre others have read and would recommend. Sharon Kay Penman is my favorite in this category. What authors and books do you recommend, what are they about, and why do you recommend them?

I would recommend the book Pirates! by Ceclia Rees. It's a pretty quick read, but very enjoyable.

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series...very well written. I actually enjoyed the sequels as much as the original. It has to do with Scotland and early American settling, and a lot of Celtic lore. I really recommend it.

You might try the Zion Covenant series by Bodie Thoene, a Christian writer. I have not read them all, but the first 3 or 4 of the series were really good.

There's a good book called The Raging Quiet. It's not set in any particular country or time period (within the Dark Ages), but it's very accurate in details of medieval life.

Well, she's named after a character from SRL's historical fiction books, so I assume she's read them.

Tee-Hee... You'd be right. I've read all SRL books through a couple of times. Those are some of my first recommendations to other people who are looking. BTW, I named my daughter "Katrianna" which is the Scottish form of the name "Caitriona".

You might try Michael Curtis Ford. He writes historical fiction that is (from the one book I've read) very, very good. The one I've read is called The Last King, and is about Mithradates, the last king of Pontus, and his struggles against Rome. I can't reccomend it highly enough.
If you like time-travelling historical fiction (which is my favorite), then I'll reffer you both to Tim Powers' The Annubis Gates, and to J. Ardian Lee's 'Matheson Saga' books, which begins with Son of the Sword. Powers book is primarily about the time period od 1800-1830, while Ms. Lee's books cover the Jacobite rebellions of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.--I forgot to mention that I have blurbed about both Lee and Powers on this very board at some point.

If you love Lawhead's Celtic fiction, I think you would like the novels of Juliet Marillier. The Sevenwater's Trilogy is a glorious and imaginative retelling of rhe Irish legend, "The Children of Lir".
The Wolfskin/Foxmask series is about a group of Vikings, 'discovering' the Orkneys (and later the Faroes) with the inevitable culture clash with the indigenes. In Wolfskin is one of the most compelling male coming of age rituals I have ever encountered.

If you like ancient Celtic (as in circa 660AD) I totally recommend the Sister Fidelma series by Peter Tremayne. They are all murder mysteries and Fidelma is a "Brehon" (woohoo) in the Irish court system. She was also the sister of a king, a sister in a convent, and many other things. It is an interesting look at how women were equals in the Irish system of government. She was also a very educated woman for that time. Interesting reads!! (There are about 10-15 books in the series so far)

My Latin teacher introduced me to the Marcus Didius Falco series. I don't usually read mysteries, but these are quite good. They're set in Rome, 70-71 AD.
The first one is called Silver Pigs. Author is Lyndsey Davis.

the AD Chronicles by Bodie and brock Thoene I have read the first one called first light and have 3 in the series I think they just wrote a 4th. on the back cover it says... In their most dramatic, ambitious and significant historical series to date. Brodie and brock Thoene once again transport readers back in time to first century AD. to the most critical events in the history of the world. I am not good at reviewing books but if you do a quick google search with the authors names and AD Chronicles you can find some reviews and such it was good but not as good as empyrion IMHO
