sow isnt all that bad. some times you get out of school for snow. lol. i hate Utah because thats where most mormons live and mrmonism is a pointless religion. Let's try to be respectful of everyone's religious beliefs in this discussion. This topic has to potential of turning into a flame war, so PLEASE, let's dicuss it maturely and without flaming each other or their religion. Thanks.

I'd like to know too. Personally, I think that no religion is "pointless," even if I do not agree with it. It matters to someone somewhere, and if it affects their beliefs, it affects everyone in the world, even if it is only in the tiniest, most undetectable way. I have many Mormon friends (yes, even in NC, a long way from Utah), and they are some of the nicest people I know. Religion should not be your reason for hating people, a state, a country, whatever. Judge people for who they are and what they do, not what they choose to believe in. Props to you Booky! You took the words right out of my mouth. If we had a Reputation system here, yours would have increased greatly with this post.

Can you explain this more. . .I don't know what "reading out of a hat" thing means. It was a joke out of the mormon south park episode, but is not entirely untrue.

It's from when Joseph Smith dictated the 'prophecies' to the rich dude. They had him read them out of a hat...then they had the rich dude's wife tell him to say he lost some of the pages and Mr. Smith had to read it again, but Smith read a different prophecy given to him from a different angel or something to the rich guy with the same basic story, but various differences. Just watch the show for yourself .

First of all. . .Joseph Smith didn't just pull these from a hat and tell Martin Harris (the person I'm taking a good educated guess is the "rich dude") what to write because Joseph Smith was illiterate. . .he had to have Emma Smith (his wife) write his letters for him.
Second of all, the Book of Lehi, the lost pages. . .all 116 pages. . .was never retranslated after Mrs. Harris lost them. Thus, it couldn't be "proven" to have changed and by "proven" I mean that someone who was against the translation in the first place got ahold of that translation and manipulated them.
An angel never dictated any of it, they were translated by the power of the Holy Ghost and I encourage you to read the Book of Mormon yourself rather than to rely on misinformation of the media

I really don't know enough about Mormanism to make many comments, but I'm sure you all know how I would feel...

I never claimed it the south park episode was accurate . I just heard the basic story from a guy who studies religions some couple years ago when I saw it and it wasn't entirely off. I barely remember much of the correct history of mormonism, mostly because I don't care. I never even made the original comment. I was simply showing what whoever the hell it was was talking about. I'm not going to argue with you past this post, but I will tell you I will never read the book of mormon.

I don't think there is anything wrong with learning about other branches of Christianity. I have read the Apocrypha and thought it was interesting. I have even read portions of the Quoran. Just because I read the BoM does not mean I will convert to LDS. It only means that I am willing to expand my knowledge of the world around me and not be close-minded to the posibility that God might have used Joseph Smith to do great things, just as he did Muhammad and other great prophets. But what do I know...

I'm sorry if you felt like I was engaging you in an argument, I merely wanted to set the record straight about my own religion. And all of my directions were not pointed toward you. . .they were pointed toward the original poster who insisted that it was all true. I'm sorry if you felt like something else was happening, that was not my intention. As for reading the Book of Mormon, that's your choice and I respect that, but like Twyrch said, nothing wrong with learning about other religions

I did come off a bit' harsh, and I apologize. I did feel like I was being attacked, so we can just forget about it. But to Twyrch, I am simply not going to fill my head with ideas from other religious books I already know I don't believe in. The Apocrypha is one thing, that was taken out of the Bible canon, but Quoran, again, is another thing I know I'll never read. I've heard enough to know it is not what I believe in, and reading it would only make me angry or whatever.

I wrote a 5 page paper called the Bastard Children of Abraham after reading it... But to each their own. I just chose to expand my worldview for the sake of knowledge, not as a seeker.

I've read many other religious texts. Some I didn't agree with, some I saw the point of, and some I absolutely loved.
I read them to understand what others believe. I read them to see what I believe. I read them to see what I don't believe. I see no harm in expanding my horizons. My heart will tell me what is right.
