There's good book, I forget what it's called, about the drug empire of Opium between what was Mexico and the US. Illegal immigrants are turned into eejits. 
Basically, computer chips allow them to follow orders... that's it. I remember resisting the idea of reading it but being absolutely enthralled once I started it.
