This has been bugging me for years... I don't remember the author and only snippets of the book, but I'm trying to piece together my memory.
The book was written by a man with the last name of blackhead... whitehead.... or was co-authored by men with the last names of Black or White and another with the last name head... I know this sounds strange, but I remember making a joke that the last name reminded me of the name of a pimple....
There were 3 books in the series... It was a fantasy adventure, young Adult genre... and I think one of the books have to do with a Sword and a Flame.... and something trapped in a pit in a cave, that the hero had to go into, under water to retrieve a talisman....
I seriously can't remember any more than that... But I would love to find those books again. I found them in the early 90's and they went out of print soon after....
If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please help...

That sounds really familiar. I might actually have the books myself. I'll do a check later today and see what I can find.

I was doing a little digging and it struck me as being very coincidental that you might actually be talking about Sword and the Flame by Lawhead. That was my first actual thought when I initially read your post.
Sword and the Flame is the last of his Dragon King trilogy. The first two were In the Hall of the Dragon King and Warlords of Nin.
All the pieces you gave about the hero having to go under water to retrieve something and the fact that it's in a cave all fit with that story.
I'm not really sure if they are actually out of print or not but they would fit the description you gave.
I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't an early April Fool's Day joke.

Dred, It's not an April Fool's joke. I am serious. You're right, it could be the Dragon King series and perhaps I read it when I was younger and forgot the Author's name over the years. Splitshell believes I could be talking about that book as well. When I get time, I think I will re-read that series and see if that's right, but nothing will happen until I finish my own story. I appreciate you looking though. You would think if I remembered the Sword and Flame title, I would have remembered the others as well. I wonder if SRL may have made an earlier attempt at that series.... Who knows.

oh, Dred......i don't believe you actually fell for that.....the whole "blackhead or whitehead" thing had me cracking up Yeah. I fell for it. I assumed a serious question at first even though I realized a joke might be apart of it. I'm glad that twyrch has at least said it wasn't meant to be a joke. Enjoy the books when you go back to reread them twyrch.

You may actually be remembering a series of books by John White:
The Tower of Geburah The Iron Sceptre The Sword Bearer - there is definately a part of this book where a boy has to go underwater to retrieve something or another
There are now more books in the series, but the first three books are definately the best, the other books get to be a bit predictable.
The series is similar to the Tales of Narnia, but are set in Winnipeg Canada and the land of Anthropos. Check them out and let me know if that is what you remember.

Oh, I like the John White books. Those were great! Read them anyway, even if they're not "the ones".
