The original Books of Magic, written by the fabulous Neil Gaiman, is a graphic novel that chronicles the exploits of the 13-year old boy wizard Timothy Hunter. There are a lot of parallels to Harry Potter, but BoM came out first. It is an incredible story, and it really is a vast, sweeping look at the occult side of the DC Universe. Practically every major and most minor occult characters make an appearance.
