My dad asked this question to me and a small group of my friends at a discussion the other day... anyone care to give their opinion? Freedom is having the ability to do something without neccessarily putting that ability into actions.

Freedom is to not be bound by anything...which is why it is so terrible. Partial freedom is wonderful...but think of total and complete freedom...freedom from responsibility, freedom from want, freedom from need, freedom from obligation...
There would be no love, no relationships, no life. We need to be tied down...we need to have hardships, responsibilities, etc.
In essense...true freedom comes when one is not wholly free...if my twisted logic makes sense...

I think freedom is being able to do absolutley whatever you want whenever, wherever etc without anyone moaning or doing anything about it. Thing is, someone's always going to be pissed off with you and some people will try and will succeed in bringing you down. In that respect we can never be truly free unless you are the only person alive *kills everyone* mwahaha!

Freedom is an abstract concept that can't be defined without certain constraints. It's not free will, because free will comes with obligations to our decisions. We can have freedom from things, but those come with responsibility. True freedom is beyond definition, and beyond human capacity.

I guess I never said what I thought...
Freedom for me is the knowledge that one day I will go to spend eternity praising The Lord in Heaven.

Lately I've learned that to me Freedom is TRUST. Sounds a little illogical, I know...but when you actually think about it it makes a great deal of sense. In a way it is intertwined with the ideas that Lady Bookwyrm and laurelin put forward...freedom with responsibility. Therefore TRUST = Resposibility = Freedom...

Freedom is taking away restrictions placed in society to allow us to expand and eplore new areas to further human development.
There are many types of freedom, some good and some bad so I would think the real question, which type of freedom do you want.

I think freedom is the freedom of the individual from unneccesary constraints placed on him by a collective -- to me, other constraints are something that, to an extent, a person chooses for himself.

Are we talking positive freedom or negative freedom? Because either way it sucks. . .Seriously! Read Liberalist writings!

Frank Herbert said it best:
"Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty."

Freedom is a state of mind. A good example would be the main character (can't remember his name) in Shawshank Redemption. When he was put in the hole for weeks on end, it didn't bring him down. He had the music he had played and the knowledge he was innocent in his heart.
One cannot be truly free unless he has complete peace, contentment, and joy in his heart. There are many millionaires and powerful people that are not at peace. Only Jesus can give that, but no one can take it away.
