We pride ourselves on our sports. In fact, many Aussies don't know there is anything else to life...
In Australia, we've celebrated the fact we've got to the top of many games (most of which many of you will know nothing about... Cricket, Rugby Union, Rugby League... I think we've even placed among the medals in Olympic Basketball a few times. Add other olympic events in there like swimming, hockey, rowing, triatholons etc and you begin to understand where all our government spending goes). Its our national identity.
Tonight, for the first time in 30 year, we finally cracked the World Game... we qualified for the 2006 Soccer World Cup. For most of us, soccer is something we only care about when world cups come around... (Australian football and the two types of rugby keep us busy the rest of the time), and we've been painfully disapointed in missing out on qualifying by unfortunate incidents in the last two oppurtunities.
But we made it tonight, downing the Uraguayans (who stopped us qualifying last time).
So three cheers to the Aussie soccer team
