In this thread I want everyone to post why they think they are a Christian. I would like to keep this thread debate-free, because I simply would like to better understand everyones beliefs. So I'll start...
When Adam sinned, all humanity fell with him. This of course includes me, and I realize that because of sin, I could never be able to come near to The Holy God of the universe. God, being Perfectly Holy, must punish sin. I believe that two people can pay the price for sin. Me, and The One who came to earth as a human, Jesus, Gods own Son. Jesus willingly was butchered and killed by His own Father, so to offer a sacrifice and be glorified by all life in Heaven. Because I have believed with my whole- if not always perfect- heart that Jesus' sacrifice was completely sufficient, and because I confess that He rose from the grave to conquer death, I will go to Heaven for eternity. I believe that no one but Jesus can pay the price, and I am thankful he did.
okay, thats it. We've had a lot of religeous discussion on this forum, so I just wanted to know what everyone thought about this particular area. Thanks!

Hmmm...what makes me a Christian?
Well...I believe Jesus is the Son of God. I believe He is the Messiah and that he will return and all that good Christianly stuff. But I am a Christian of Catholic denomination...which means I believe in Saints, the Virgin Mother, Angels, Archangels, etc. There is a lot of confusion on this topic, which I will clear up right now...we do NOT worship Mary, this is a common misconception. I always hate it when people say Catholics aren't Christians...that really, really hurts, because it is not true, but I usually get over it and move on.

I believe that Adam and Eve did sin; this caused two things, the bad example of rebellions (i.e. sin), and caused death to become a part of the human condition. Christ was the necessary remedy for this situation, in that he could both provide the sinless example and also could rob death of its power ("O Death where is Thy Sting, O Grave where is Thy victory?"). I believe that Jesus Christ was the incarnate Logos, the Word of Blessing by which all was Created. I believed that he was crucifed, dead, burried, descended into Hell, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. I believe in a holy brotherhood of all Christians, and I believe that salvation is community oriented--not selfishly individual. I believe that Christ will come again (and I'm a pre-Millenialist).

I believe that Jesus died for the sins of the world and his blood covers my sins as well. I believe in Jesus as well as on the saving power of Jesus.
For me, the Apostle's creed sums up the rest of my belief.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

TULIP. ;D
That is, man is totally depraived and unable to save himself, so that God must unconditionally elect him to be saved. This means that Christ's atonement, though powerful enough in abstract to save everyone, was actually meant for, and actually saved, only those whom God elected. This means that grace is irresistable--you can't say no to God. And because of all this, my salvation is absolutely assured, and God perseveres with me.
And I'm post-millenialist; when Christ returns, it will be in victory, not to clean up the mess he failed to fix at Calvary.

I'm a Southern Baptist ;D
I'm a Christian because I have to be. I've felt the presence of God and denying its truth would be denying myself. I believe in the sinful nature of man, Christ's incarnation and sacrifice, and all humans have the free will to choose or reject him to receive his blessing of eternal life.

Sorry FantasyFan. . .but you're post reminded me of something I learned in my church. . ."Adam fell that men might be, and men are that they might have joy. . ." Don't know why that's popping in my head, but it is. . .
Anyway, I'm Christian because I believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. I know that Jesus is the Christ and suffered for all sins so that man might have joy through eternal life. I also know that this fall is part of obtaining that eternal and ever lasting life with our Heavenly Father and Christ. I know that he will come again and on that day I want him to say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
I hope that covers it all. . . I can't think very straight right now. . .

3 verses in John pretty much sum up what it means to be a follower and disciple of Jesus Christ (i.e. Christian)
Joh 13:35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."-Jesus
Joh 14:15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments."-Jesus
Joh 14:21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."-Jesus
Now it's up to you, to read the Word and seek Christ and find out what these commandments are. Though i do have to say, if you have Christ within you the yoke is light. suffice it to say, if you love Jesus with word and deed, in spirit and in truth, you know Christ and the Father and will be with Him in Heaven.

Hebrews 11:1: "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we cannot see."

I don't believe in anything... My parents do believe in God, and are Christians, and they have educated me in order to believe in God as well... but, I cannot believe in something that I never saw! I believe I can graduate in July, I believe Benfica (soccer team) is going to win the championship, I believe the human race is a auto-destroying specie. I celebrate Christmas, to be with my family, cause it´s the only time in the year that we can all be together....never think that´s Jesus birth date. Some of you will be like this -> <- but that´s how I think.

That's cool Ilew. . .to each their own. . .we can't judge you just because you don't feel the need to believe in a superior being named God. . .Can I ask if you believe in any religion, are you looking, or are you just satisified with what you have?

I'm happy as I am... I mean, I respect the people that believe in God, but one thing that I cannot deny is that some wars begun upon religious incompatibilities... 1st and 2nd world war begun in Jugoslavia (where there are muslim´s, christians, etc..) <- I have to read more about this, I'm not so sure... correct me if I am wrong the situation in Kosovo... the war in Iraq... the Israel/Palestinian conflict...

lol...no from me...let me believe what I believe and I'll grant you the same respect, that's my philosophy. I do like to discuss theological views with people of different religions, though...right now, I am really liking Judaism. If I wasn't a Catholic, I think I'd be Jewish. But I have friends from many beliefs...Christians, atheists, agnostics, Wiccans, Muslims, Jews, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, you name it, I'm probably good friends with one of them.

Christianity is very Jewish if you think of it. We worship Yahweh, and his son...and there are Messianic Jews who see Jesus as the Messiah, and their savior. In fact the Bible even articulates that we are part of the Promise to Abraham, especially in Hebrews, and thus true Jews ourselves. We are the nation of Israel by adoption... I'm not saying Judaism is Christianity though, just like the Pharisees of old, Judaism was spoken against by Jesus...for they were trying in their good works to reach God, when God had sent his son to show them in His death that they couldn't only Jesus could reach God, and bring us along with Him.

When devotion to God is used for the purposes of man, it is corrupt beyond any mortal sin...
