Check these out... The Fall Festival in Evansville, IN used to be the second biggest street festival in America, next only to Mardi Gras. Has anyone here been to a Fall Festival in IN? Now that Katrina has hit New Orleans(sympathy's) the Fall Festival should be the biggest! I dunno, we'll have to see how New Orleans is doing next March... With all due respect to the victims of Katrina, I can't help but feel excited that my home town holds such a significant event in America... and I can't say I'm sorry to see Mardi Gras ended...

One--it's very cool that Evansville has such a big, inclusive event.
Two--Mardi Gras isn't ended, because it doesn't just occur in New Orleans.

I'm confused. I know that Mardi Gras is celebrated everywhere in America, but I thought that hundereds of thousands flocked to New Orleans every year just to be a part of the street festival?

The celebration of Mardi Gras isn't peculiar to New Orleans. And yes, thousands of people went there for it. But there are other places that put on street festivals in celebration of it as well (the other notable ones along the coast used to be in Biloxi and in Mobile). So, the celebration of Mardi Gras won't go away just because New Orleans may or may not be in condition to do it this year.
But you can bet it'll be back. It's too much of a tourist draw for the city to let the tradition die out.

yeah mardi gras (french for "fat Tuesday") is the day before the season of lent. Lent is a Forty day periodwhich starts on the wednesday 40 days before good easter. During lent people give up thing of value to them (watch chocolat, it takes place during lent). Before they had to give things up people would gorge on what ever they were sacrificing for 40 days, therefore creating fat tuesday.

I realize that Mardi Gras is celebrated everywhere, but the festival it is best known for is in New Orleans, which might not be so grand this year.
More people celebrate Christmas across The U.S.A. than the Fall festival also, but as far as street festivals go...
