I am writing a new murder mystery game to play next February and I have a basic plot but I'd love some help fleshing out the rest of the story. Well, here it is. The story takes place on March 17th, in Ireland. (I'll put a link to the castle where it takes place at the end.) There is a castle with a turret and the only reason I can think that everyone would be up there is to watch a comet at night. That is where the murder would happen. The names of the people are all linked to the color green because it is on St. Patrick's Day. The names I have so far are Niles, Kelly, Lincoln, Olive, Ivy, Apple, and Hunter. I'm still working on the plot of "who done it" and why and would appreciate any and all suggestions. (Just don't be offended if I can't use them www.elegant.ie/g183.html(link to the castle) Thanks so much! dreamer

I did think of one thing though... what if you were to try to get "volunteers" for this game in an online fashion... People could respond via PM and you could update the thread as the GM. Then you could see what worked and what didn't work and you'd have a better idea of how you wanted the real murder mystery to progress. Just a thought...

I'll have to keep that in mind. Right now, I really need to get the plot straightened out. The details come later. It is really a type of play that characters act out and then the groups go around and interview the suspects to try and figure out who did it and why. I wrote one about 6 years ago and it was so much fun for everyone, I thought I'd give it another try.

I like all the names (here's another Clover). I like the concept too.
You said it takes place on St. Patrick's Day. In the basic plot are you looking at this having something to do with the holiday or Ireland in any way? Is it set in modern times? I would be happy to brainstorm with you on this. Just let me know what I can do to help.

It is set in modern times. The references to green are all going to be subtle and have something to do with the murder itself, probably in the way of money. It is set in the castle, but I haven't worked out motive and really haven't figured a good reason for all of them to gather there. My only thoughts are to have a comet viewing or an eclipse or something like that where they would be up in the turret and all have come willingly and in the dark. The actors will be up in the balcony and someone will "fall" down to the floor below. Then the "inspector" --narrator--will ask the audience for help to solve the mystery and find out who and why it was done. Then the audience members go and interview the different suspects for clues. That's what I've got so far. I'm working on characters this week, so I'll have a few of those done soon, I hope.
Thanks for your help!! It's lovely! dreamer

Yea, you've got to figure out 'who done it' yourself first and why before you write the other characters in and how they will cloud up the story.
I like the comet watching because you can combine scientists with others who are just interested in the event or who were brought along by someone who is interested, but they are not.
Regarding word play: it would be really cool to work in how everyone thinks the death was 'unlucky' and then have the narrator or one of the characters drive home the point that there is no such thing as luck.
more random thoughts later... LOL

That's all I've gotten done as of yet, I'll keep you posted and would love any further suggestions!
