Another good O'Donohue quote I just thought about:
"To the loving eye, everthing is real.'

"The most hateful grief of all human griefs is this, to have knowledge of the truth but no power over the event" - Herodotus
"Reduce the size of the state; Lessen the population. Make sure that even though there are labor saving tools, they are never used. Make sure that the people look on death as a weighty matter and never move to distant places. Even though they have ships and carts, they will have no use for them. Even though they have armor and weapons, they will have no reason to deploy them. Make sure that the people return to the use proper measurements. Make their food savory, Make their clothes fine, Make their houses comfortable, Their lives happy." - Lao-Tzu

Probably one of my favorite quotes of all time:
"Then he isn't safe?" "Safe? Don't you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you." -Lucy & Mr. Beaver talking about Aslan
And I saw this on a T-shirt I really want: [front]I'm not playing hard to get. [back]I am hard to get.

Two more from Lao-tzu
"The more taboos and prohibitions there are in the world, the poorer the people. The more sharp impliments the people have, the more benighted the state. The more clever and skillful the people, the more strange and perverse things arise. The more clear the laws and edicts, the more thieves and robbers."
"In pursuit of learning, one does more and more each day; In pursuit of the Way [Tao], one does less and less each day; One does less and less until one does nothing; One does nothing yet nothing is left undown. Gaining the world always is accomplished by following no activity. As soon as one actively tries, one will fall short of gaining the world."

hahahaha
Reminds me of a conversation I had the other night where I related the amusing anecdote about Dorothy Parker.
At a dinner party, she was once asked to use the word "horticulture" in a sentence. Her reply?
"You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think."
***
For a more serious note:
"The abolition of educational priviledge by disposing of culture at bargain prices does not admit the masses to the preserves from which they were formerly exluded but, under the existing social conditions, contributes to the decay of education and the progress of barbaric incoherence." -Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, The Dialectic of Enlightenment

"When I get to heaven, I shall see three wonders there: the first wonder will be to see so many people there whom I did not expect to see; the second, to miss many people whom I did expect to see; and the third and greatest wonder of all will be to find myself there." --- John Newton
When encountering something new, first, have a go. If that doesn't work, force it. If all else fails, read the instructions. --- Not sure if this comes from anywhere... its kind of a family motto.
