Danath, thought I'd start a new thread for this. I don't know where you are in Texas but I'm in the Bryan/College Station area.
A&M has an online certification that takes 12 to 18 months that could have you in the classroom by this January. It's $4,600 for the program, however. I thought Blinn College had something but I can't find it on their website, all I saw was a list of "area universities with certification programs". Have you started looking yet?
Also, if anyone else out there has any information/advice on this issue, feel free to volunteer!

If you have a choice between 'certification' and 'alternative certification,' go with the regular. The alternative, in the experience of acquaintances of mine, is at least as much work and at least as expensive and takes at least as much time, and then you get looked down on for not having the real thing.

I am in the Temple area and am doing alternative certification through iteachTEXAS, but am eligible to teach this fall if I can get hired. I'm also not too worried about being looked down on because I have a year of college teaching experience as well as a Master's Degree.
iteachTEXAS is an online alternative certification that allows 6 months to complete the coursework, in addition to the 2 semester "internship." Basically get a job with a district and they will set you up with a mentor teacher and deduct $3,700 from your paychecks during the year.

Both of you, if you think you are already capable of taking and passing any of the required tests, you might want to register and get those taken before the fees go up dramatically on September 1.

After the fun and excitement of getting my fingerprints digitally taken today, I only have my content exam next thursday to look forward to.
Where did you find out that the testing fees are going up?
Also, probably a silly question given your responses in this thread, but are you in Texas?

Rooting around a little bit after [maroon]Paladin[/maroon]'s post, I didn't find what he was looking for, but I found a note about testing fees at this page. *gasp!* I am merely somewhere.

Tegid is Mr. Secretive I met him once very briefly. TEACH was a program I had heard of but had forgotten what it was called so thanks for the link. Unfortunately, they don't offer a program for Social Studies 8-12 which is what I need. Danath, I'll look into iteachTEXAS, THANKS!
