The best word I can think of to describe that series is "graphic" - meaning both spiritually and physically. It is not one to read with a weak stomach.
It is that aspect of it that makes it powerful at times. Unfortunately, it also tends to get a little bogged down, and the characters sometimes become somewhat detached from the story. Some people find this to be a turn-off, perhaps because these books are not quite as eloquent as other SRL works.
Myself - I found them fascinating. Historically, they are incredibly accurate the way the fiction is set into what we know and what is written of the time. The characters can be a little obnoxious and the story sometimes difficult to follow, but I enjoyed them very much. I thought they were intriguing as well as entertaining.
I hope you enjoy them. Certainly post your thoughts.

It's been a while since I've read it, but I recall that things don't really tie together until the end. Sure, you get bits and pieces but it is pretty ambiguous until the end.

Yes, you'll need to read through the entire book to get the little pieces that start to fit together and then when the series is finished, you really find out what is going on.
Enjoy

So I know that this series is Fiction but I am about done with a European Civilization class in summer school and having read this series actually helped me quite a bit when we got to the Crusades... just a thought but I thought it was pretty awesome...

I know what you mean. I took Western Civilization in both high school and college and it's amazing how much of a difference reading this series made for me.
