I must be honest. I've always been totally bored with the story of King Arthur. I would never have read the Pendragon books if Stephen hadn't written them.
Now I know what the problem was. I'd seen so many bad movies about Arthur that I couldn't stand to punish myself by experiencing the story again.
However, SRL has brought his usual talents to this story and told it in such a fresh and intense way that I couldn't put my book down.
It reminds me of the poem about the old violin called "The Touch of the Masters Hand" by Myra Brooks Welch. It tells the story of an old violin that is battered and scarred and apparently useless. No one will pay even a dollar to buy it until a man comes forward and plays a sweet melody on it. Then the price of the violin goes up dramatically. All because something old has been brought back to life by the touch of a True Artist. (I realize that the poem is really talking about the difference the Lord makes when he redeems a person and how we go from battered and useless to something of value. But I think it pertains to any person who takes something old and makes it new. Perhaps that is one way we are most like a reflection of our Maker.)
