I couldn't find one, so I made one...
Personally, I have to say this was the book that got me hooked on the sci-fi fantasy thing (ok, this book and Star Wars ;D).
Along with the pendragon cycle its the most read item on my shelves at home.
What drew me in? I love the time travel speculation, the developement of a human society removed from normal constraints. The wormhole travel thing wasn't so far removed from reality it made a reasonably believable premise.
The core characters were interesting, if sometimes infuriating.
And I've always wondered where the Hage idea was drawn from - I know classes exist in society, but I thought the idea was brilliant.
I've seen a few others say they appreciate this book... your thoughts?

I always enjoyed these books. While they can be a little dark at times with what takes place, they are well developed and great fun to read. I haven't read them in a few years but have been meaning to for a while.

One of my top four Lawhead series (couldn't narrow it down any further). I think 'Hage' came from 'HSC', the Human Survival Cells used during the Red Death, which became the areas of expertise, eventually developing into the social strata we know during the story.
I was most fascinated by the idea of it becoming a totally different civilization.

One of the things I loved about book 1 (not 2 so much) was how wonderfully encryptic SRL was with where the story was going. The first time I read it, I had no idea what was going to happen and I fully believed that Mr. Treet didn't either. A good SciFi is simply a great ride. I loved it!

Hee hee, EAT...it might be because I'm incredibly sleep deprived right now (stupid end of the school year), but I find that really funny. And I love Empyrion. I was already a fan of science fiction when I read the books, and I definately think these two books are sci-fi at it's best. Did anyone else notice the similarity between Empyrion and the Dune series?

The first book is just called "Dune". And they are kind of hard to get into, but they're really good. I usually call them the Lord of the Rings of science fiction.

I didnt have a credit card so he actually ordered it for me and I paid him back I absolutely loved it it competes with my other favourite this present darkness for top spot. in fact I liked empyrion so much I have decided to collect all the stephen lawhead books so I can read them too since a lot are going out of print and one shop said that they were not going to be reprinted. anyway yep empyrion is a great book it is the reason I now own 15 lawhead books and will get the rest as I can hope it's ok reserecting this thread

I've just finished the first book in Empyrion last night. I think I started it a couple of days ago...the days get away from me. It's not my favorite book SRL has written, but I'm not much into SF either, so that might explain it. I also get into the characters and sometimes I don't like what Treet does, like professing his undying love to Yarden, then sleeping with Calin. It just didn't jive with me. Okay, so now I'm forced to go onto the next book since he left a cliff hanger and I have to find out what happens to Treet when he enters Dome.

Well, I will say that while I didn't like most of book 2, mostly because of the fighting and torture and so forth, I loved other aspects of the book.
My favorite part in book 2 was the dance that Yarden did when she wanted to learn to become an artist. I think that is the perfect way to describe what I do for God. I enter that place of entirely letting go of myself and moving to the rhythym of God. It really hit me when I was reading it. WOW! I LOVED that part of the book.
I also really enjoyed at the end where SRL wrapped everything up in a nice neat little package with a VERY happy ending. I love happy endings. All the bad guys either dead or converted from their evil ways and all the good guys building new lives. It was really heart warming.
I'm not much into doing book reviews, but I really felt like I needed to come back and tell what was on my heart regarding this one. I want to type up the area where SRL did the dance piece and of course give him credit, but post it in my house...where I never forget. That I need to let go and let God. That's what it's all about. Wow!
