The sun was setting, and the moon was just coming out of its peaceful slumber. I had been stalking my prey, for about 2 days now. A wolf pack about ten in all, a couple of them slow paced and tired. I had food for about two more days, and I was three days from home. I needed to make this catch tonight, as the wolves cried themselves to sleep in front of the moon. The wolves took their bed's next to a lake, . I found a sturdy tree and climbed it, I strung my oak bow, and knocked an arrow. The sun was now down and started its rest, the moon was ready for his shift to use his ever watching eye. I gazed down at the beautiful valley, animals were all settling in and getting ready for their rest through the night, every animal except the wolf would live to see another day. It was truly a sad thing, I did not enjoy taking life from souls when they have no reason to die. But as it is this is the cycle of life, the wolves settled into their slumber and I readied myself. Once the wolves entered their sleep I aimed, I aimed for the the leader of the pack. I pulled back the string as far back as my strength would allow me to, aimed for his head-Continue

Thunk! The arrow found its mark and now the pack was in a frenzy. Quickly grabbing another arrow I notched it and took aim. Thunk! Another arrow stuck in the forehead of the beast which had been hurtling towards me. Now in the thick of things --

They were too close for arrows. I grabbed at my belt where my knife hung and groaned in horror. Then there were teeth in my leg...

I yelled and tumbled backward. Catching the branch below with one arm I fought to grip my knife before the creature on my leg could pull me down. Below, the growls of the wolves alerted me to their presence. What could be attacking me up here? I yelled as great claws dug into my hip and plunged the knife down behind me, hoping to strike something vital.

And then as the teeth bit harder down on my leg, I was pulled from my own conscious. I was in a room, black with a red glow. There was man sitting the a chair, as if waiting for me. He stated "You are safe for now, but when we are done here you will be back where you have come from" I looked around for some kind of exit, but there were none. The man, dressed in gold and black robes studied me for a minute and spoke again, "I have brought you here to tell you something vital..

"Uh..." I stared at the man for a moment, then looked down at my body. It occurred to me that this might be a dream, and while I was out of it here, wherever here was...my body was most likely back there getting ripped apart by my strange attacker and perhaps even the wolves. "Send me back quickly!"
He gave me a grave look, as though I had seriously offended him and did nothing.
Making an attempt to be reasonable, I spoke slowly and clearly. "Look, tell me some other time, ok? I'd rather not be dead when I get back...if I really go back. Would you please let me battle off whatever is attacking me and preserve what's left of my skin? I promise I'll listen to this important information then."

The man snorted in contempt. "Little man," he said, "your lack of faith grieves me. You will endure much before you are able to hear the words that I offered freely." He stood up and moved away, dark except for the dim glint of gold at his neck in the firelight. I could no longer see the gold part of his robes, only the dark.
"No, wait!" I cried, and I found I had shouted to a wolf with his paws on my chest and his slavering mouth lifted to the moon.

Two wolves were dragging a limp body away from me, though the rest seemed to have fled. I realized the knife was still in my hand and sliced the throat of the one on my chest as its teeth snapped inches from my neck. He had been deceived by my lack of struggle into considering me harmless. I shoved his body aside.
Finding that my bow had fallen beside me, I pulled an arrow from the scattered pile on the ground and aimed. The shot flew true, and I took up a second arrow for the final wolf. This time I missed, though it ran into the forest yelping from a severe wound. What had they been dragging?
I wondered if it was my prior attacker, and limped forward to see what had managed to creep up on me. At the sight of the body beneath its ragged cloak, despair swept over me like a great landslide, burying me beneath the certainty that my life would never be the same. How could I not have recognized the sign of the man in black? Why hadn't I remembered the ancient tales in that moment? Forgetting my wounds in the face of far greater pain, I collapsed beside the body of my nemesis and wept.
