And I would like to know, out of pure curiosity, for those who are fans of Anime, what is the appeal?

Primarily for me. . .it's hearing the Japanese language. . .I love hearing it. . .I also get caught up in the stories. For some reason, they can put together some complex and amazing stories . . .I love it. I also love how some of the stories can tie to things I've read. . .example: Tad William's Otherland series goes hand in hand with the anime series called .hack//sign
As far as recommendations go. . .I completely one hundred percent endorse Full Metal Alchemist along with the movie. . .it is an AMAZING series!!!! I also like Naruto, Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny, Hajamie No Ippo (This is a boxing one, very interesting plot line), Fruits Basket (this one is more light hearted), Magic Knights RayEarth, Yuyu Hakasho (sp?), Kenshin--I recommend starting with trust and betrayal and then go to the series before watching the final movie--Inuyasha (used to play on Cartoon Network), Weiss Kreuz (lots of pretty boys!!!), but go for the subbed version, not the dubbed one), Initial D, I liked the manga for Ceres, also for Chobbits. . .
Hope you can find something in there you like. I LOVE Trigun and will one day eventually watch all of Cowboy Bebop. . .And Evangelion is just amazing!. . .I'm sure I could think of more if you give me a chance but those are the top recommendations and there are ALWAYS more coming out.

All I know I get from my brother, who is such a big anime fan that he started a club at college, and has a pretty big group now... I like Fruits Basket, because it is exactly what life would be like if my brothers and I lived together with one girl - and I know what you're thinking, but no, I'm pretty sure there's no bad content - it's a pretty funny show. I also liked the action in Full Metal Achemist as well as the storyline. My brother is a HUGE Cowboy Bebop fan. I believe it's his favorite. He raves about it whenever he gets a chance. However, I haven't ever seen more than a few minutes of it at a time, so I can't really comment on that one..

Cowboy Bebop is AMAZING. The same goes for Fullmetal Alchemist and Trigun (I want Wolfwood's cross gun). I would definately recommend those three series to anyone. Trinity Blood is one I recently got into watching, although I hesitate to recommend it simply because, even though it's very good and interesting to watch, it's also extremely violent sometimes. If you can handle Braveheart/Glory/The Patriot/etc., then you should be fine, but I thought I'd throw that warning up there, since I mentioned the show. As for movies, Miyazaki's movies are also always a good time. And with the possible exception of Princess Mononoke, his movies are pretty family friendly. Grave of the Fireflies is an excellent, excellent movie, although you'll need a box of tissues handy if you watch that one. Probably more than one. Oh, and one last thing. Did I mention that Cowboy Bebop has the most amazingly awesome soundtrack ever? Because it does.

Only episode of Cowboy Bebop I've seen contained a scene where a guy steps into the shower, turns around and exposes HIS boobs. No thank you, I gave at the office, that person no longer resides here, no soliciting!

I just like anime style art. We don't get tv so I don't watch it. I've only seen a couple movies. The Cat Returns is my fave! howl's Moving Castle was WEIRD!

I LOVE Howl's Moving Castle!!! It was simply an amazing story and so well put together. . .If you don't like that you probably won't like Mirror Mask (which is not anime but very good nonetheless)

I'm sort of with Paladin on this one- I just don't see what creates the rabid fandom that lots of anime fans practice. I mean, granted, I enjoy Trigun, FLCL, and the more accesible movies such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, but all in all, I just can't get into it.
The music in a lot of series is pretty good though. The Pillows music for example, is great and lends it's self nicely to FLCL.
Mirrormask is an awesome movie. 'Nuff said.
