The Mrs. and I went out to see this movie tonight in celebration of our anniversary. It was such a treat to sit down in a theater and be treated to a respectfully made Christian film.
The pace is a little slow (sometimes it drags a bit) but the film is visually beautiful and the story is very compelling. I found Joseph to be particularly endearing; he and Mary are very easy to relate to, and our ability to empathize with them really makes the story come to life.
Another high point are the Magi; they provide a touch of comic relief, but their own journey is very entertaining to watch. And it demonstrates how God has control even over the "ungodly" practices of astrology; such practices in this movie validate God's sovereignty.
The film definitely makes the Judea of over 2000 years ago come to life. And the birth of Christ was beautiful - a very effective climax that I was glad to reach. It was the kind of moment that moves people to tears.
Though parts of the film is intense, it never gets quite as violent as it does in the opening moments, which show the slaughter of Bethlehem's young ones. It's not gory by any means, but seeing crying children ripped away from their folks and seeing the bawling parents afterward will certainly bring a chill to the spine of most parents. It's a heart-wrenching scene.
Virtually no liberties were taken with the story, and the only major variation I noted was the lack of the multitude of angels singing "Glory to God in the highest" etc. etc. Pretty much everything else is there.
Definitely one to see for the entire family. I know once the DVD hits it will become a holiday tradition in our house. It's highly enjoyable seeing the birth of Christ brought to life in this way, and it really makes the event come alive. I highly recommend seeing this movie.
