If you're anything like me, coming up with creative names for your characters can be quite a challenge. I found this website very helpful in choosing character names... Linky There is an area where you can look for names from different nations as well...

Tell me about it. Coming up with a creative name that doesn't sound stupid, and hasn't been used ten thousand times before is a challenge sometimes. Other times, my characters name themselves. Like the hero and main villain of the story I'm currently working on. I'll have to check out that website.

Like in the meaning of the name.... stuff like that... Other times, I had the Female Dwarf names end in "a" and come from Norse.... the Male Dwarf names ended in "r" and came from Norse as well.... Just a hodpodge of stuff really.

All of my characters have old Celtic names...and the ones that are more modern still have good Irish names, lol. The meaning of the name is of course, very important...

Most of the name's in my story are real. I usually try to pick names that reflect the personality of the character, either by how it sounds or what it means. Names of characters in my story: Gabriel- "God is my strength" (Hebrew)
Nicolae- I'm gussing it's meaning has something to do with victory, since that's what Nicol, Nicolas, & Nicodemus mean
Jospeh- "God shall add" (Hebrew)
Nathan- "the gift of God" (Hebrew)
Geoffry- "divinely peaceful" (Teutonic)
Jessica- "Wealthy" (Hebrew)
And my other two main characters, Mya and Llyvia, are going through name changes.

Did you mean to use to many Hebrew names or did it just happen that way? Great names, BTW.

Honestly, I just really come up with random names. Names that I like. Nothing more complicated than that. When I name a character its like they are a baby. It may seem weird at first, but once you have fleshed out their personality and oth such sundry, "grown" them up a bit, as it were, the name just seems right, because they have become a real person, in my mind.

I've got a set of interrelated short stories that I've been working on for a while...the premise is this pseudo-Christianized "Order" who are working to eliminate certain kinds of evil from the world (I'm trying not to give too much away). Anyway, my characters (at least, the good ones) names are as follows--and each name has something reflective in it about the character:
Alan Fisher-King - "head" of the Order; his name is obv. a play on Alan, son of Joseph of Arimathea, and his title as the "rich fisher"
Michelle Snow - Alan's old flame, but who dabbled for a while in the dark arts (and tried to kill him a couple of times); now restored to grace, she struggles with her purity.
Sarah Wittakre - she's a Seer; she's also the one from whom great things are promised.
Paul Anderson - he's a police detetive and the group's skeptic; his wfe's life was saved once thanks to the Order's intervention, and now he works with them occasionally; incidentally "Anderson" means "son of man"
Jacen and Eilia Thamos - This husband and wife pair are two of the powerhouses of the group; Jacen's ancestry is (largely) Greek, which is important to the story.
James Oldcastle - come from an old New England family that has more pride and tradition than money these days
Marc Jackson - college student who gets mixed up in the world of the Order because he's being used as a pawn for a powerful necromancer
Malcom McCallum - he's a rogue priest and trained exorcist, and also, coincidentally, the claimant to the throne of Scotland
Erik Yrenstein - Galician Jew who is the group's expert on the Kabbalah and the western esoteric traditions

Bah, I'm a name machine. Just give me the general mood of the character and I'll play around with letters and sounds in my head until I come up with something I like. Just a couple of examples - Elgar Van Torrengar, Darityl Starwing Moonsong, Kaylos, Yashanin, Kalayna, Tolim, etc. Seriously, I could write nearly infinite names...it's just something I can do.

Wow... Those are some cool names. If the publishers like my story but want me to change the names, maybe you could give me a hand...

Those Irish names are soooooooooooo pretty, Twrch! I just wish they were spelled the way they're supposed to be pronounced. It's like Chinese: the supposed "transliterators" give you something like Xao and expect you to say "shee". I use www.behindthename.com

Unfortunately, Gaelic grammar does not allow for words to be spelled as they sound. But, if you know the grammar then it gets easier as you go along. I hope my readers (if I get any) won't find the words too difficult.
