I can't read books right now... No time when I'm writing my own. But I am listening to books on tape in the car and I'm listening to Seventh Son, by Orson Scott Card.
I love the plot and I love the storyline... I hate the story. I can't put my finger on what it is, but something just about it rubs me the wrong way.
Maybe it's the way the conversations go... or the fact it's being read to me by the woman who played Major Kira on Deep Space Nine (Nana Visitor).
Has anyone else read these? Should I continue to push my way through? Alvin has just been born and the little girl is taking care of him... that's where I stopped.

I haven't actually read that series, but...several of my friends have and loved them. I don't know about the tape, but Card is generally a rewarding author, as far as reading goes.

I've read both of the Alvin Maker stories that have appeared in the Legends anthologies--and there were both terrific. The series of books has been on my "to-read" list for a long time, but I haven't ever gotten around to them. Still, when Alvin gets older and learns more about Making (based on the experience of two short stories) he gets to be a really interesting character.
Oh, and as a general rule, I don't like recorded books; usually, they're abridged, but even when their not, I can't handle the single voice reading the story. When I read something, I've got a vast repetoire of "voices" in my mind when I read--I can't stand everything to sound the same. It's just a strange quirk of mine.

Audio books go soooooooooooo slowly. Back in seventh grade we would listen to Tom Sawyer in the classroom; I would finish ten chapters during five pages as the audio read.

I read the first three books in the original ender series, but never went beyond that -- like all his works, they are just so heavily depressing.
I am not so much actually depressed as annoyed when I encounter depressing material, though, which is why I stopped reading Card, I think.

I tend to agree, from what I've read. No Hinata, I haven't picked up Ender's Game, but I did look for it at the library yesterday. Since I can only have books on tape for a while, I didn't find it there... I will check another library after I finish the new ones I got.

Depressing? Card. . .I didn't find it depressing. . .*Shrugs* Maybe I'm just weird. But the fourth book in the original Ender series has some AWESOME theories. . . I loved them!

I just bought Ender's Shadow, so I'm starting it soon.
Is it a bad thing if my favorite character was Peter? lol

Just finished Ender's Game. I liked it, dark though it was. Has anyone read Card's "Enchantment"? I just picked that up from the library and want to know if it's any good.
