Hello all. I have been a fan of Stephens for about 7 years so far, yet have only read the Dragon King Saga and the Pendragon Cycle (probably the best) and I would like to know what you thought of those books?

Hi, and welcome aboard. Dragon King Trilogy: [SPOILERS for the unwary, ]I'm in the process of reading these--I have yet to get my hands on the last book --but I think they're pretty good for what they are: light fantasy. Very awkward in several points, with hardly the emotional power of Lawhead's later work, but pretty fun. The villians are ridiculously over-the-top: Nimrood in a bad way (insane laughs are always a bad sign for a villian,) and Nin in a way that is almost satiric. Signs of a writer not yet in his form. Several really iconic moments, though--the resurrection of the Dragon King in the first book, and the forging of Zhalagheer in the second. All this said without the benefit of reading the final installment. Pendragon Cycle: Great, great, great. I have my gripes with bits and pieces of it, but as a whole, it's a remarkable bit of work--including Avalon, though it's not really in the same class--or even genre--as the others. (I realize, of course, that it's not offically part of the Cycle, but it's close enough.)

I loved the Pendragon Cycle. An amazing piece of work all around. What I find most remarkable about the whole series is how it maintains a steady flow of reading and comprehension when all the details and plot lines are pulled from dozens upon dozens of sources. I could go on and on but the Pendragon Cycle is by far my favorite read of anything I have read to date.

Welcome to the boards Swagman! Cia mar a tha thu. Let's see... I have read the dragon king saga in over a decade, but I remember enjoying it. I loved the Pendragon Cycle (Merlin, Arthur, Taliesin). The additional 3 books (Pendragon, Grail, Avalon) didn't do much for me.

I Have not read the Pendragon Cycle in years but I loved the Dragon King Trilogy. The Warlords of Nin is a great book for any fantasy fan.

Welcome to the board.
I have read both series and enjoyed them a great deal. As with any author, there are going to be things we would have liked to see done differently but I thought these were really wonderful.
Continue reading his work. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Cool! Gaelic is pretty... lol Welcome to the forum, Swagman! I really like the first two books of the Pendragon Cycle (I would say three, but I've only read the last four once), and I just read Dragon King. It's good, although definitely "early Lawhead".

Welcome Swagman! I class the Pendragon Cycle (the first 3 books), with the Song of Albion books, as Lawhead's best works. The Dragon King trilogy has always felt like it was written for a younger audience. By the way, Twyrch, you may want to clarify the type of gaelic your talking in - Scottish. The Irish is a little different. Tha gu math.
