Sometimes don't you wish you could just have a real conversation with someone? Not just 'how are you today?' and the norm answer 'fine, good, whatever' don't you wish you could respond truthfully?
But in reality if you did respond truthfully, the person would be taken aback by this astonishing response. Just imagine:
"How was your day today?"
"Oh you know, I stepped in crap coming out of starbucks. Then I tried to wipe it off with my napkin from my frapp, and this worked good enough, so I attempted to throw it into the trashcan. While in flight a draft came in and flung it onto this HUGE man. Well to make a long story short my car now has fork marks all over it. Oh and last night I couldn't fall asleep cuz i found out my mom has cancer. .. and my son hates me. So how are you today?"

I rarely give the casual "fine" answer. If I don't feel well, I actually indicate this, mildly, by answering with a shrug, "Ok". Depending on the person I may begin a brief conversation about what's ailing me. And, yes, I do sometimes get the nonplussed expression meaning, "What? Do I look like I care? Just give the polite answer and get with the program!" But then I never have been one to be able to wear social pretenses convincingly... even when it would be advantageous to do so.

i try not to give the "usual" answers.....if someone asks how my day is, i tell them how my day is.....honesty is the best policy and all that jazz.

not with me, you don't. most people are so wrapped up in the lies they tell, though, that they can't recognize and appreciate other people for what they truly are.

I generally try to say how I really am. I do this even with people I'm not entirely familiar with. I don't necessarily go into all kinds of details but I'll give enough information that if the person is truly interested, then they'll be able to ask for more information.
