THE SKIN MAP - Book 1 of the BRIGHT EMPIRES series
By: Stephen Lawhead
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Publication Date: September 2010
A new five-part fantasy series by the author of the KING RAVEN trilogy. The first book in the new series—The Skin Map—is planned to release September 2010, followed annually by The Bone House, The Spirit Well, The Shadow Lamp, and The Fatal Tree.
On a seemingly ordinary day in contemporary London, Kit Livingstone encounters a man who introduces himself as Kit‘s great-grandfather Cosimo—who has traveled in time to reach him. Before he realizes what‘s happening, Kit is hurtled across time and space, back to a slightly altered 17th-century London, where Cosimo recruits him for a dangerous quest: recovering the elusive Skin Map.
The Skin Map is the personal creation of a 17th-century explorer named Arthur Flinders-Petrie, who was especially skilled in discovering the pathways that connect our world to ancient times and parallel universes. Afraid of losing his discoveries, Flinders-Petrie used the talents of a master tattoo artist in Macao to permanently imprint a coded map on his skin, which would be preserved and passed along to those who would continue his work after his death.
But the Skin Map has been stolen, and Kit and Cosimo are pitted against treacherous rivals in a race to recover it. Unbeknownst to the map‘s seekers, the Skin Map is not the prize at the end of the race, but merely the first goal of a vast and marvelous quest to regain Paradise. This time-traveling scavenger hunt spans different historical settings, including London in the 21st and 17th centuries, the Austrian Empire during the Magick Court of Emperor Rudolf II, China of the Qing Dynasty, and 18th-century Egypt.
Stephen Lawhead is an internationally acclaimed author of mythic history and imaginative fiction. His works include Byzantium and the series The Pendragon Cycle, The Celtic Crusades, and The Song of Albion, and King Raven. He lives in the United Kingdom.
