I know what you mean. It was hard reading about him being in that shape but it also leads itself to the heros we discover later on.

True--Do you ever find your self watching a movie, urging the good guys to kill the bad guy in that early moment when they could have and did not, or urging the protagonist to make the good decision or do the action that would save the life of a beloved character (even though you have seen it a hundred times and know how it will go). I find myself doing that all the time, but laughing at myself and thinking, "Of course that would make for a very short movie."

Oh yes. I do that a great deal of the time. There are some movies that bring tears to my eyes each and every time I watch them. Armageddon and Apollo 13 are two that come to mind. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen those movies, there are certain parts that always bring tears to my eyes.

I think the Dragon King trilogy was my first exposure to SRL (I can't remember if it was this or Empyrion), and I will never forget my father reading these out loud to me. I loved the adventure and scope of the novels, and I would agree that the sword forging in book two was the best!
However, my one complaint in this series was that the Christianity in them seemed forced, almost added on as an afterthought or as a mini sermon rather than an integral part of the story. Perhaps this was just a part of SRL's learning process in how to weave this element into the story itself - which has definately improved in his later works.

At the age of 13 the Dragon King Trilogy was my first introduction to SRL. My imagination was captured from the start, and I can't describe how many ways these books shaped me for the better as a young man. Even to this day I am especially moved by the relationships between Quentin and Toli and Quentin and Bria.
Of all his works these remain my favorites.
On a side note, I would love to own The Dragon King Saga in a hard cover leather bound edition. Does anyone know if this exists?
