On my list, I'm reading Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis, The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks, Wait For Me By Rebecca St. James( just because it's there) and....I just forgot the name of the book.
On my to read list I have, The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks, re-reading Anthem by Ahn something or other. I can't remember, and re-reading a book full of Bloom County comic strips.

Ayn Rand's Anthem...I remember being captivated by it when I was a sophomore in high school, so then I read The Fountainhead. Looking back on Rand now--and after having read some of her straight up defenses of her Romantic Objectivism philosophy (for example, The Virtue of Selfishness) I find a lot of what she has to say to be laughable at best, and seriously dangerous at worst. Nothing scares me more than to think that there are people out there who think she might've been right.

For those of us that aren't as up on our philosophy as we should be-- is Romantic Objectivism a type of "enlightened self-interest," such as Luzhin advocates in Crime and Punishment? (My guess derives from the title of Rand's book.)

Hmm...it's more than that, but yes, it's very much englightned self interest; except for the fact that Rand demands that we eschew altruism (which, I'm not opposed to), becuase altruism encourages weakness...but it's not clear how, if you're seeking to be Rand's superman (Howard Roark), you shouldn't encourage weakness in those you are in competition with. She's inconsistent, which makes it bad philosophy.

Thanks for clarifying; it sounds very much in the Luzhin vein. Interesting.

I'm almost finished with Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower--if I don't finish it tonight, I definitely will tomorrow. But I can tell you from what I've already read (I'm 90 pages from the end), that I love it. I love it in the way that I love Dune and in the way that I love Daniel Quinn's books (especially The Story of B). It reminds me of both of them, in odd ways.

I just finished "In the Hall Of the Dragon King" by SRL - good fantasy/adventure. Taking a break from that trilogy to read "The Subtle Serpent" by Peter Tremayne. It's an Irish mystery series set in the 600's AD. The main character is Sister Fidelma who is a kind of nun but also a dalaigh, or district attorney for lack of a better term. Not a great series but rich in Irish history and daily life stuff. He's also written Celtic history books.

AP US History required reading... Killer Angels and A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. I hope he's not as wordy as his titles! Pretty skinny little tome, though... I need to return the books Friday, so must hop to it.

I enjoyed Frederick Douglass more the second time I read it.
This summer I've reread the Space Trilogy, Lion Witch and the Wardrobe (couldn't help it after that trailer) and numerous Discworld books. I started rereading The Once and Future King but accidentally left it in Bham. I'm also in the middle of Walking on Water by Madeline L'Engle.
