Why did Talmai wear gloves?

To hide his six fingered hand.

What did Lila realise about her father while trapped in the pod?

Something like this: He was not an uncaring or unfeeling man, but he had been hurt very badly, and had buried himself in ways, to protect himself from the hurt. This was the case when her mother was still alive, and now she herself had just hurt him very badly as well, thinking only of herself rather than of him and others.

As soon as Joyce was ushered into the employee's lounge, what did she pull out of her purse?

Okay, let's try this one instead:
When Tommy was found on a raft, crewmen noticed that hairs on his feet were singed. What was the explanation given for that?

"Aquarius it is for sure."
"It could have been a curse...or a spirit...something dark, and altogether unkind. Look, you can see it in his face."
And out of curiosity, which book was Joyce in?

That's what the crew thought might have killed him. But I'm wanting the specific cause for the singed hairs.
Joyce is mentioned in Trapped at the Bottom of the Sea and plays a prominent role in Mayday at Two Thousand Five Hundred (originally titled Flying Blind).
I'll take the answer to either question.

He was a firewalker.
And I don't have that book! I thought there were only four. I did find the mention of Joyce in the one I have, though. *laugh* No purse!

Right, it was the firewalking that did it. Your turn.
(P.S.: There are a total of eight Cooper Kids books.)

Ack! I would have hunted them down back when I adored these books. Now I'll just check the church library. What did Dr. Cooper give Mrs. Flaherty that left nothing unsaid?

A little plastic egg with a little paper heart inside, accompanied by a note. The egg apparently was a memento of their conversation about the emotions each had concerning their respective deceased spouses, emotions locked up in a shell, waiting to explode some day.
