If this is from The Carasoyn and you're referring to the diverted stream, his father sat there with a spoon halfway to his mouth, and he continued to stare at it for quite some time. Eventually, he told Colin that he didn't see why the boy, curious creature that he was, shouldn't have his fancies just like older people did. He agreed to let the stream run through the house a while to see whether this would work out.
