The Whomping Willow near Hogsmeade was created by Dumbledore during Lupin’s first year to protect him on nights that he is a werewolf. A tunnel was dug connecting the house in Hogsmeade to the Hogwarts grounds and the Whomping Willow planted to enable Lupin to transform in safety and secrecy.
